Cactus gardens like this one in the broad median on the corner of Pacific Beach Drive and Jewell Street are part of community beautification that Pacific Beach is promoting as part of the eco-district plan it intends to begin implementing this year.

Paula Ferraco, a member of the Pacific Beach Community Garden, said she had, until recently, been searching for the resident who has been maintaining the cactus garden. She said Beautify PB and organizers of the eco-district want to support their efforts and help maintain the space and hopefully create more spaces like it in the community.

In December, residents in Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and Mission Bay Park met with several members of the American Institute of Architect’s Sustainable Design Assessment Team, a team of nationally accredited professionals in urban design, planning, landscape architecture, renewable energy, and traffic and transportation. The team and the community worked together on a strategy to make beach communities greener, cleaner and more economically lean.
