Betty Jane (Johnson) Walker, a longtime resident of South Mission Beach (since 1952) recently passed away.

Originally from Blackwell, Okla., she grew up in Alhambra, Calif. and later attended Mercy College of Nursing.

A lover of all things ocean, she started scuba diving in the early 1950s, collecting for Scripps Aquarium and later SeaWorld, and enjoyed underwater photography, diving with the Orca Diving Club and swimming in the bay with her friend, Dee.

She remarried Dr. Ted Walker, a gray whale expert, in the 1970s and continued her adventures.

Later in life, you could see her collecting trash off the beach with her beloved service dog, LT Kije.

A memorial will be held at her home at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27.

Please call to RSVP at (213) 804-2300.
