A local church plans to sweep through the Ocean Beach community Sunday, Sept. 10, cleaning up and helping many local residents in need.

The event is titled "God's Work, Our Hands."

Congregation members from St. Peter's by the Sea Lutheran Church will descend on the central business district and other areas with brooms, rakes, shovels, dust pans and trash bags to spruce up areas in need of attention.

Church members will be easily recognizable in bright yellow T-shirts. Pastor Karen Marohn wants to reassure the community there is no need for alarm. "It's just us Lutherans," she said, "Our hands doing God's work."

The event will also be delivering items to local residents and children.

More than 300 church members have been working to create school bags for needy youngsters containing writing materials, notebooks and other school supplies.

Also planned are hygiene kits for persons living on the streets packed with soft energy bars, travel-size shampoo, soap, hand sanitizer, toothbrushes and toothpaste, water bottles and socks.

Members will also write letters to be delivered with home-baked cookies and plants to persons who are homebound.

The church, at 1371 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., has served the Ocean Beach community since 1946 with a strong spirit of family and fellowship. For more information, visit www.stpetersbythesea.org.
