The dog whose comforting touch with the disabled has translated into hundreds of thousands of dollars' research funding will touch yet another life, this time at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 8200 Camino del Oro, off La Jolla Shores.

Ricochet, the 7-year-old golden retriever noted for her considerable ability on a surfboard (particularly with a disabled companion), will hit the waves with Logan Velchansky, 5, who's afflicted with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The disease, reportedly the leading genetic cause of infant death, involves a loss of protein in the spinal cord, resulting in systemwide muscular atrophy. Death before age 20 is reportedly frequent, although cognitive functions are said to remain unaffected.

September is SMA Awareness Month.

Ricochet's last La Jolla Shores appearance was in August as she surfed with two Denver sisters suffering from a life-shortening illness.
