I want to let the world know about Doctor Padman the Great spell caster that brought back my husband to me when i thought all hope was lost, I got my love back and saved my marriage… I was married for 3years with 1kid and we lived happily until things started getting ugly and we had fights and argued almost every time… it got worse at a point that he filed for divorce… I tried my best to make him change his mind & stay with me because I love him so much and don’t want to lose him but everything just didn’t work out… he moved out of the house because it was a rented apartment and still went ahead to file for divorce… I pleaded and tried everything but still nothing worked. The breakthrough came when someone introduced me to this wonderful, great spell caster who eventually helped me out… I have never been a fan of things like this but just decided to try reluctantly because I was desperate and left with no choice… He did special prayers and used his power… Within 4 days my husband called me and he said he was sorry for all the emotional pains he had cost me, moved back to the house and we continue to live happily and our son is happy too and we are expecting our second child… (padmanlovespell@yahoo.com) I have introduced him to a lot of couples with problems across the world and they have had good news… Just thought I should share my experience because I strongly believe someone out there need’s it… You can email him through his email.padmanlovespell@yahoo.com

In between newer and more modern buildings and structures in La Jolla, there’s still a bit of charm and whimsy to be found at 256 Prospect St.

Located here and within the village on this lush property is Redwood Hollow Cottages aka Prospect View. These quaint dwellings have been part of the local scenery for decades and continue to intrigue visitors from far and wide with their rich history.

Redwood Hollow's site was first developed by Walter Scott Lieber circa 1915 and was named Prospect View. At the time there were “wide ocean views from this area since all the surrounding lots were vacant,” the property website states.

At one point, Lieber had a number of these cottage courts around La Jolla used for daily, weekly, and monthly rentals. However, in later years, they were all demolished for large-scale condominiums except for Redwood Hollow. The property now consists of two contiguous parcels linked together in 1998, and again according to the property’s website, “Redwood Hollow is about 400 yards from ‘Whispering Sands Beach.’”

Although nestled in a serene residential neighborhood, the property is only about 4 miles from shops, parks, art galleries, and restaurants.

Today the cottages serve as vacation rentals and some are private residences; some of the cottages include a full kitchen, queen-sized or king-sized bed in the bedroom(s) and a sleep sofa in the living or sitting area. The 12 units range from studios to three-bedroom, two-bath cottages. Some units have fireplaces, and others are lined with redwood or cedar.

The architecture is considered a Craftsman and mountain-style cottage, which was popular at Southern California beach resorts early in the 20th century. Since 2013, the property has been managed by Capital Asset Management Co., which in recent years conducted various renovations including new restrooms, floors, ceilings, and walls.

    LANDMARK

Redwood Hollow Cottages is not only a popular place to vacation. It was registered as San Diego Historic Site No. 347 in 1997. Below is an excerpt from the historical nomination report written and prepared by historical consultant Alexander D. Bevil in 1997.

This is a cluster of five small, rustic, 1 to 2-story Craftsman and Ranch style bungalow cottages. Arranged around a central garden court, they are linked physically and visually by a meandering red brick walkway. Several of the bungalow cottages share common garden and patio areas, which adds to the property's communal sense of place.”

Bevil added in the historical analysis of the property: Although built between 1915 and 1951, and even though they went through many remodels over the years, “they still share similar form, type, style, materials, methods of construction, and use.”

Some of the remodels at the time of his report included, “the use of similar roof styles and shingles, exterior split-redwood shingle, board-and-batten, and clapboard wall cladding, and recessed porch and multi-light window treatments.”

Additionally, he wrote: “The buildings' uniform scale and layout, plus the use of red brick planters and mature plant material, link the entire site together into a unified whole.

The report further confirms the cottages were associated with “noted La Jolla real estate developer and philanthropist Walter R. Lieber, and it is one of at least 30 similar bungalow cottage rentals he developed between 1904 and 1945 …

While first developed by Lieber ca. 1915 as Prospect View, subsequent owners continued to develop it into a bungalow cottage garden court by retaining the use of similar style, type, and building materials. Grouped as parts of a whole, each building contributes to the property's overall sense of scale, feeling, and place,” Bevil wrote.

The feeling can apparently still be felt as is.

People from all over the world come and stay at Redwood; they’re all different themes, and the interior design is the creative genius of Mariela DeStout, operations director for CAM. Popularity varies and there isn’t one that is more popular than the others,” according to Sheridan Cucurillo, property manager at Redwood Hollow Cottages.

And even though improvements have been made “aesthetically and mechanically, it is still the same in most ways,” she added. “The property is whimsical, magical and peaceful; one of the most beautiful places to come and rest and relax.”

Throughout the years, Redwood Hollow Cottages has not only been a place for vacationers but also a location visited by famous surfers, artisans, writers, and other professionals.

It looks like time continues to stand still at 256 Prospect St., La Jolla — much to many people’s delight.

In the mid 1970s these cottages were rental apartments owned by the Barrymore Family who lived on Coast Walk. Mr. Barrymore owned a fleet of classic cars that often transported folks for the LJ Historical Society annual historical site tours. The cottages were occupied a medley of individuals from aesthetes to artists to everday "weird" folks who just liked the place. My friend, Ted Stauch, managed the place for Mr. Barrymore and moved from a small studio to the small single cottage at the far west. he planted many of the flowers and shrubs during his time there. Eventually he lived in the ground floor of the house to the south which became part of the complex.Ted worked at the Mithras Bookstore (look it up)/Unicorn Cinema at LJ Blvd and Pearl St and for the Green Tiger Press. Those 1970s-1980s were an amazing time at this complex and in LJ. One cottage was rented by Melaine Christiansen who owned and operated BookWorks in Del Mar. Both Ted and Melaine have passed but there spirit and those of others inhabit Redwood Hollow.

Oh my goodness, I remember these cottages! I lived just around the corner, on South Coast Boulevard, from 1967-1970, and I remember cutting through the property on my way to school. I also remember the Mithras Bookstore and the Unicorn Cinema, which to my young teen self seemed just the epitome of cool. The apartment I lived in was part of a modest two-story building with nine units, built, I believe, in the 1930s or 1940s. It was torn down a few years ago. and it seems to me that with its sad demise, that entire era passed from view.

Kitten Lady gets personal rescuing at-risk kittens in San Diego

Two book releases in the last month, an appearance on Animal Planet, and two advocacy awards show not only how quickly Hannah Shaw has been able to make a name for herself in the public eye, but also the ripple effect of her high-energy and hands-on approach regarding kitten advocacy, rescue and education. “This has all happened much to my surprise and delight,” said Shaw, founder of the nonprofit Orphan Kitten Club, which provides lifesaving operations and the world’s first grant program specifically funding innovation in kitten welfare. “When people realize that these babies are all unique and so worthy of protection, I think that it gets a lot of people to go out and sign up to foster in their own communities.” Nicknamed the “Kitten Lady,” Shaw provides educational media and training resources on her website and social media, as well as instructional workshops, all to help individuals and animal shelters learn how to save the lives of kittens. “I wanted to create a fun community where people could see up close and personal what it looks like to rescue kittens, and also help people to feel like they know the individual animal,” said Shaw, who tries to share all the intimate moments she has with her rescued kittens, from helping them through a disease to helping them hit their first steps, making them hats or even writing songs about the kittens. “It hopefully helps with finding adopters and encouraging more fostering,” Working closely with the San Diego Humane Society, East County Animal Rescue and Love Your Feral Felines, Shaw has helped to rescue dozens of kittens (and two neonatal piglets) since moving from Washington to San Diego, including Flapjack, a malnourished orange tabby who was covered in fleas when Shaw and her team found him in Spring Valley. “Hannah has done a great deal for kittens all across the world through her humane education program, and now that Hannah is local to San Diego, we are proud to have her Orphan Kitten Club as a rescue partner,” said Jackie Noble, nursery manager at San Diego Humane Society. “Not only does OKC care for these kittens at their in-home Kitten Nursery, they also help out our community through their Full Circle TNR (trap-neuter-return) program. Talk about the ‘purr-fect’ partnership!” Though his brother didn’t survive, Flapjack regained his health and was the inspiration for Shaw’s new Full Circle Program, where Shaw and her nonprofit team go out and sterilize the family, or colony, of the kitten they rescue. “When we picked him up, we saw just how many cats there were in just his colony living as strays,” said Shaw. “These cats are coming into shelters at the rate that they are because there’s so many community cats outside. There’s no harsh winters in San Diego, so it’s kitten season year-round here.” Orphan Kitten Club also takes on cases where the kitten’s condition is more challenging, perhaps too challenging for the average shelter, such as their most recent addition to Shaw kitty nursery, the tuxedo kitten named Apple. Apple was born with Swimmer Syndrome so her hind legs spread out like a frog’s, inhibiting her from walking. For the next few weeks, Shaw will be wrapping and taping Apple’s legs so they can grow in a normal posture. “A lot of kittens like her are euthanized because she can’t walk, but with us she will get to live a normal life,” said Shaw. “We work with the kittens that no one else will.” Shaw is also a New York Times bestselling author, with her educational book on the U.S. kitten crisis “Tiny But Mighty.” Shaw also has an upcoming children’s book, “Kitten Lady’s Big Book of Little Kittens,” which releases Tuesday, Oct. 8. The book takes children through the life of foster kittens. Both books can be found at Barnes & Noble or on Shaw’s website, kittenlady.org. “It’s all a lot more personal for me now,” said Shaw, who had been an activist for many years but never planned on getting this hands-on with the work. “It’s not just theoretical. It’s not just data. You’re not just trying to convince people something matters because you read a statistic,” she said. You’re literally looking at a little life in the palm of your hand and knowing that there are so many other little lives like that who are out there in need of love and support and care. “That’s why, whenever I teach, I teach using stories. It’s not a theory, it’s a real kitten that you can hold and see and feel and that needs your help.” To apply to adopt any of Shaw’s rescues, visit orphankittenclub.org.

Several local surfers and shapers were among legends of the sport who were inducted Aug. 13 into San Diego's Surfing Hall of Fame at a ceremony at Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. The event was hailed by its organizers as “the greatest gathering of surf legends San Diego has ever seen.” Among the inaugural list of surfing hall of famers: • Skip Frye (from Pacific Beach known for his pro surf career and iconic boards.) • Mike Hynson (from Pacific Beach who costarred in the 1966 hit "The Endless Summer" and surfboard design guru.) • Butch Van Artsdalen (from La Jolla, a pioneering surfer who took on 25-foot waves in Hawaii to garner the title "Mr. Pipeline.") • Tom Ortner (La Jolla resident and an icon in the Windansea beach community.) • Carl Ekstrom (from La Jolla, developed the first asymmetrical boards in the late 1960s.) • Larry Gordon (a fixture in the board making community from the 1960s until his death in 2016.) • John Holly (veteran Ocean Beach surfer and board shaper.) • Chuck Hasley (founder of the Windansea Surf Club of La Jolla.) • Windansea Surf Club (legendary surf club known for boasting some of the best-known surfing names.) Surfboard craftsman Hank Warner, a legend in his own right, was the event’s master of ceremonies. “It was a big event, Belly Up was packed,” said Warner adding, “Ninety-nine percent of surfers grew up idolizing these inductees in the San Diego Surfing Hall of Fame.” Attendees enjoyed live music from Jimmy Lewis, live art from Wade Koniakowsky, and a special collaboration between Warner and surf filmmaker Ira Opper.  "These innovators and pioneers have emerged everywhere that waves break. In this regard, San Diego has been particularly blessed," organizers wrote. "Our 70 miles of coastline have produced some of the most innovative shapers and wave stylists in the sport. And as everyone paddling out to the lineup knows, you have to honor those who have come before us." Warner discussed his long-term goals for the San Diego Hall of Fame. “We’re going to be doing this yearly,” he said. “We have a list of about 100 people we’ll be choosing from.” Warner pointed out the inaugural list of legends are “influential surfers so it was pretty much bulletproof (selecting) for the first year.” Warner said the objective is for the San Diego Hall of Fame to be nonprofit and truly representative of the surfing community. “It’s an amazing group,” he noted. “It’s not just surfers. It’s shapers. It’s artists. It’s photographers, the whole gamut. It’s really honoring all the elite surfers who have come before us.” Discussing the policy of a future brick-and-mortar San Diego Hall of Fame site, Warner envisions inductees “donating boards, photos, wetsuits, etc., priceless heirlooms to the museum/hall of fame.”

In addition to its breathtaking scenery La Jolla has something a lot of beachside communities don’t – sea caves. The seven La Jolla sea caves – The White Lady, Shopping Cart, Little Sister, Sea Surprize, Arch Cave, Sunny Jim and Clam Cave – can be identified from east to west. It is said the caves were formed from a 75-million-year-old sandstone cliff, and according to an LA Times article, they were originally used as a hideout for drug smugglers and some pirates. In addition, all but the Sunny Jim and The White Lady were named in the 1900s and 1800s by lifeguards to help identify landmarks during search and rescue missions, according to the same article. Speaking of Sunny Jim, it is the only La Jolla cave accessible by land; visitors can walk down 145 steps into a hand-dug tunnel after buying a ticket at the Cave Store. As the story goes, and according to La Jolla Historical Society archives, the Sunny Jim cave has a long history dating back to 1902. “The Sunny Jim Cave was one of seven La Jolla caves originally exploited as a tourist attraction in the early 1900s by Gustav Schultz, a German immigrant, artist, and engineer. Schulz, a self-proclaimed professor, artist, photographer and civil engineer, who dug a tunnel into it and provided public access from land, first by rope and then stairs, collected a modest sum from anyone wishing to enter,” said La Jolla Historical Society historian Carol Olten. “The same idea has continued into the present day with people paying a fee to make the descent  from inside the Cave Store into Sunny Jim, eponymously named after a historic cartoon character whose profile is vaguely suggested by the silhouette seen from looking oceanward through it,” Olten said. She added that for many years the store operated mainly as a shell shop for exotic and not-so-exotic-finds, but the merchandise today is more generalized with “beachy things, postcards, a few antiques and memorabilia.” Early Days In the beginning, visitors had to enter through the original Schulz’s Cave Store and lowered themselves down into the tunnel by a rope. Years later the steps were added and continue today, according to current Cave Store shop owner Shannon Smith. Smith said she has owned the shop for a few years now located at 1325 Coast Blvd. and it has become more of a souvenir store for those looking to take a bit of the nostalgia back home. “The store and cave continue to be popular attractions all these decades later we have thousands who visit yearly and probably hundreds daily,” she said. “We are the oldest continuously running business – we’ve been open more than 100 years. “When people go down the steps it takes about 10-15 minutes through a long tunnel and they end up on a platform inside the cave where they can take in the scene,” she said. There’s no swimming or jumping into the water and because it’s a sea cave the water comes in and out of the cave. “The water is underneath you, so you don’t get wet. People love it,” she said. However, some recent construction in the area has caused a bit of a wrinkle for the shop. “It has slowed down slightly but people are still allowed to drive down here but they can’t drive all the way down Coast Boulevard,” she said. “We still have a lot of visitors, but parking is limited. “The city is doing some repair work on Cove Cave, which is not accessible to locals or tourists.” According to Anthony Santacroce, senior spokesperson for City of San Diego, the city has taken safety precautions for the repairs. Crews began the emergency construction project to stabilize one cliff area on Aug. 8, and the roadway in La Jolla following an analysis by geology experts. He said experts discovered a zone of weakness where "Koch's Cave," (pronounced as "cook" and named after lifeguard Jeff Koch who made a daring rescue there in 1977) is located underneath Coast Boulevard and recommended action be taken. “We immediately shut down the street and initiated an emergency contract to reinforce the cave,” Santacroce said. As part of the stabilization project, sections of Cave Street and Coast Boulevard will be closed temporarily to all traffic for about six weeks or longer depending on what is found by the crews, he said. “People can still get around and this cave will essentially be closed off permanently, we’re just not sure how it will appear when the project is completed,” he said. “People however can still get around and see the beautiful La Jolla caves.” Other Sunny Jim Folklore According to more folklore, some stories suggest the cave was initially called “Sunny Jim” by Frank Baum, the author of “The Wizard of Oz.” Why? Because looking outward from the inside of the cave, the opening profile resembles the cartoon mascot for British Force Wheat Cereal (named Sunny Jim) created by W.W. Denslow in the 1920s. There are other rumors and tales suggesting the cavern was named after former California Gov. “Sunny Jim” Rolph. A third tales says it is named so because its opening resembles a smiling (sunny) man (named Jim for an unknown reason) facing leftward.Like Sunny Jim the other six caves have their own story and history, which will be explored in upcoming articles.
