    Friday, Sept. 25

    A bicycle registry and community ride event, The Tour de PB, is being held Sunday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event’s purpose is to promote bike registration while encouraging residents to explore the beach community by bicycle. The self-guided bike tour includes stops that highlight bicycle safety resources, safe routes, local art, and the natural environment in the PB neighborhood. Location of tents and volunteers: Crown Point Coffee, PB Bikes, Kendall Frost Marsh, and PB Middle School.
    The Tour de PB can be completed any time, but volunteers will be available at bike registry locations on Sunday during the proscribed hours to help guests register their bike with the Bike Index. Registering your bike in a national database helps to decrease the incidence of bike theft in Pacific Beach and neighboring communities.
    Bicyclists can also visit the Bike Index website to create an account on their own. Submit your name, bike manufacturer, serial number, and component information to enter your bike into the database. If your bike is ever stolen, pawn shops or other potential buyers will be able to cross-reference the serial number with the database when a bike thief tries to sell it. Police also have access to the bike registry database to help with bike recovery. For more information, visit

    San Diego-based healthcare analytics and diagnostics company, Genalyte, has opened a new COVID-19 antibody testing location at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Genalyte is continuing to make its SARS-CoV-2 Multi-Antigen Serology Panel available to the public to test for IgM and IgG antibodies produced in response to the novel Coronavirus. SARS-CoV-2 is the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Genalyte’s SARS-CoV-2 Serology Panel detects antibodies specific to SARS-CoV-2 antigens. Antibodies are proteins made by your body to attack foreign substances, like viruses or bacteria. The process of developing antibodies is termed an immune response. If you have been exposed to SARS-CoV-2, your body may produce antibodies to the virus. This test is designed to detect the overall presence (positive) or absence (negative) of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, which may indicate that you have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 sometime in the past.
    Appointments are available Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m.-6:30 p.m. and test results are shared through secure electronic messaging, typically within 24-48 hours. Appointments can be scheduled at

    The Presidents’ Round Table has selected San Diego City College President Ricky Shabazz as the dean of the Men of Color Student Leadership Institute — a program to develop and promote efforts to increase the attendance, persistence, and completion of underrepresented males in community colleges.
    “I am excited to take on the role as dean for the Men of Color Student Leadership Institute,” Shabazz said. “This provides a national platform to promote programs that are designed to help men of color succeed across the country.”

    The City continues to provide weekly trash collection to residences and is committed to keeping neighborhoods clean from litter and trash. To report any instances of overflowing trash cans or dumpsters, the public can make a request through the City’s Get it Done app, or by calling Environmental Services at 858-694-7000 or emailing to [email protected].

    The City Attorney’s Office has prevailed in six lawsuits that sought to have San Diego taxpayers pick up the tab for injuries caused by the careless users of motorized scooters. The City was removed as a defendant in each of the six cases after successfully arguing that the facts and the law did not support the plaintiffs’ claims of public liability. The lawsuits can still proceed against the scooter operator, Bird Rides Inc., which was also named as a defendant in each suit. No scooter riders were named as defendants in any of the cases. Settling the six lawsuits could have cost the City in excess of $1 million.
    “This string of victories reinforces our position that San Diego taxpayers are not responsible for the conduct of scooter rental companies or scooter users,” City Attorney Mara W. Elliott said.  “I’m proud of my attorneys for fighting to protect taxpayers from meritless lawsuits that divert public funds from important priorities like filling potholes and fixing sidewalks.”
    Elliott noted that the City expects scooter rental companies to operate responsibly and in a way that does not endanger the public in exchange for the privilege of using the public right-of-way. Under the City’s current regulatory framework, scooter rental companies agree to indemnify the City from the consequences of riders that do not follow operating rules.
    The six lawsuits’ alleged events occurred between June 2018 and April 2019 on city sidewalks, where riding motorized scooters is illegal under state law, and on the beach boardwalks, where motorized scooter riding has since been banned by the City. Plaintiffs alleged a variety of scooter-involved injuries including being struck by a scooter, being injured while taking evasive action to avoid a scooter, being struck by a bicyclist who was avoiding a scooter, and tripping on a scooter left lying on a sidewalk.  
    Under state law, a public agency is not liable for third-party conduct that causes harm on its property unless the property is itself in a dangerous condition that factored in the harm. The City properties where these incidents occurred are not dangerous. Deputy City Attorneys Kelly McGeehan and Meghan Ashley Wharton represented the City in these cases.
    After the incidents alleged in the lawsuits, the mayor and City Council approved regulations that prohibited the operation of all motorized transportation devices on the boardwalks of Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and La Jolla Shores, and on the Mission Bay Park Bayside Walk. The City Council approved the regulations on Jan. 30. 

    SeaWorld’s Spooktacular family-fun Halloween festivities kick off Oct. 2 and continue Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 1. During kids' free month at SeaWorld, kids ages 3 to 9 get in free with the purchase of a full-paid adult admission, through Nov. 1.
    During Spooktacular, families can safely dance and celebrate together at the all-new Sesame Street Halloween dance party and capture photos with their furry friends including Count von Count, dressed in festive Halloween costumes on colorful parade floats, plus visit some of their favorite animals.

    For those who would normally look forward to Oktoberfest and fall beer celebrations this time of the year, some of Liberty Station’s cornerstone venues are upholding San Diego’s beer-loving traditions. Bottlecraft at Liberty Public Market welcomes hopheads to stock up on aptly themed taps, in addition to take-home pretzel kits and stein giveaways.
    The Loma Club, Liberty Station’s historic nine-hole walking course, is hosting an Oktoberfest-themed golf tournament. The four-player scramble will kick off on Sunday, Oct. 4 on the green at 11 a.m., followed by a noon shotgun and a fun-filled day of golf, beer and bites. With giveaways for the winning team and topnotch costumes, guests are encouraged to sport their best lederhosen and dirndls. Tickets include a welcome beer and Bavarian-themed tasters throughout the fairway. The Loma Club will also be offering all-day beer and shot specials at the clubhouse.  
    Liberty Public Market has also provisioned all the necessities to bring the spirit of Oktoberfest home. From now to Oct. 4, Bottlecraft, the food hall’s boutique beer shop, will be tapping speciality festbiers and craft ales to-go, growler included. The specialty shop will also be giving away free steins with each purchase of six-plus cans or bottles from their eclectic variety of local, rare and international brews. To round out the experience, guests can grab a take-home pretzel pack at check-out. The DIY kits are complete with a giant house-made German pretzel, hot mustard and beer cheese to bake at home. 


    San Diego’s smart streetlights program, intended as a means of public planning to capture data about air quality and traffic, has been temporarily paused by the City. "Mayor Faulconer has directed City staff to completely turn off access to video footage from smart streetlights following clear feedback from City Council members and community leaders that they want a surveillance ordinance in place before the council will consider any use of this technology," said Gustavo Portela, the City’s senior press secretary and director of Media Affairs.
    The Smart Streetlights project began as a cost-savings effort for the City to replace high-energy use streetlights with more efficient LED lights. It has evolved into deployment of one of the largest smart city sensor platforms. The anonymous data collected by the sensors can be used to develop applications and systems that generate event data (static data on parking, vehicle counts, bicycle counts, pedestrian counts, temperature, humidity, pressure).
    The sensors upload event data to the CityIQ cloud database provided by the City’s technology partner. Application developers and the public can download the data from the cloud using programming tools.
    But the smart streetlights program has hit an unexpected snag, as the technology has experienced mission creep, meaning the devices that were deployed for one stated purpose, have wound up serving another. During the recent Black Lives Matter protests in late May and early June, Sand Diego Police Department accessed the streetlight cameras at least 35 times in search of evidence to be used against protesters accused of vandalism, assault and other crimes. Recently, tech and civil rights activists with the Trust SD Coalition called on City officials to reject a new proposal giving police exclusive access to the smart streetlight cameras.


    Attracting award-winning artists from 22 countries around the world, the 40th International Exhibition is being held now through Oct. 31. The exhibition showcases the very best of watermedia art and provides inspiration to all art enthusiasts from students to serious collectors.
    Michael Reardon, the juror for this show and himself an award-winning artist, author, instructor and Signature member of the American and National Watercolor Societies, did an amazing job of choosing 100 paintings from 827 submissions. Online viewers will enjoy a variety of art from abstract to figurative, all exemplifying the artists’ experiences and passions for creating works that will last through the centuries.     The Pacific Beach Town Council has open seats for its 2021 board and is accepting nominations now until Sept. 30. PBTC is a group of volunteers who love Pacific Beach and take initiative to make the neighborhood a little better every day. Are you passionate about keeping PB tidy with trash clean-ups?     The La Jolla neighborhood is urging dog owners to provide their own waste bags and take filled ones home to deposit in their own trash, along the bike path between the community and La Jolla High School. The dog waste bags and receptacles along the Bike Path are provided by the Bird Rock Maintenance Assessment District funds and are intended for emergency use only (if you forgot to bring your own). If you use a bag, please consider replenishing it on your next visit. Leaving used bags on top of a full container, or on the ground next to it, creates an eyesore and potential health risk for the community. Be considerate of neighbors and responsible for taking care of your pet’s messes and not create more messes for others.


    SeaWorld announced all-new Halloween and Christmas festivities this year as well as the launch of an updated annual pass program that gives fans the opportunity to enjoy the park’s holiday thrills as much as they want in 2020.     Get your kids Halloween costumes ready for SeaWorld’s Spooktacular starting Friday, Oct 2. The fan-favorite will feature spooky surprises and fall fun for kids, like a pumpkin scavenger hunt, a candy trail that will lead to a safe and fun trick-or-treating experience, cookie decorating with some furry friends and a Spooktacular dance party. The park’s annual Christmas Celebration will launch in November and include some of the park’s most cherished yuletide traditions. Admission to Spooktacular and Christmas Celebration are both included with an annual pass.


    Thousands of students are getting tested for COVID-19 before heading back to class at University of California San Diego. “It wasn’t that bad. It was like two little swabs in the nostril and honestly, you can get a little teary-eyed but that’s it,” student Tanzi Terry said. “It’s really quick and simple.”
    She was one of the many students who were swabbed in a drive-through testing area set up for students recently during move in. University leaders said 8,000 students will be tested over a 10-day period before they’re allowed to move into their dorms and start school for the fall. They are assigned days and times in order to allow for expedited testing and minimized contact with others. 
    “It was definitely a different experience having something stuck up your nose but I felt like it’s kind of necessary for us,” student Michael Herrera said. “Before moving in, just to make sure we’re safe.”
    Fall classes are expected to begin at a reduced capacity with students required to social distance and wear masks. The university is using a hybrid learning strategy with online and in-person instruction.

    For their longstanding efforts to provide affordable and high-quality health care to low-income and medically underserved communities throughout the region, California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) announced that he has named Family Health Centers of San Diego as the 2020 Nonprofit of the Year for the 78th Assembly District. There are two Family Health Centers along the coast, Beach Area Family Health Center at 3705 Mission Blvd., and Beach Area Women’s Health Center at 3690 Mission Blvd.

    Wednesay, Sept. 23

    The Navy’s latest America-class amphibious assault ship, USS Tripoli arrived at Naval Base San Diego on Sept. 18 following its commissioning and subsequent sail around South America this summer. Tripoli, the only America-class amphibious assault ship in San Diego, joins the Wasp-class large deck amphibious assault vessels USS Essex (LHD 2), USS Boxer (LHD 4), USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), and USS Makin Island (LHD 8). As the largest amphibious ship on the waterfront, Tripoli serves as an LHD variant designed to accommodate the Marine Corps' future Air Combat Element (ACE) including the F-35B Lightning II and MV-22 Osprey.
    Tripoli is the second LHA to be delivered to the Navy, and the third in naval history to bear the name which harkens back to the first U.S. battle fought on foreign soil. The name Tripoli was previously assigned to a Casablanca-class escort carrier which saw service in the Second World War. Later, the first amphibious assault ship with the name USS Tripoli (LPH 10) served in Vietnam and during the Gulf War.

    During the past 37 years, the San Diego City Firefighters have donated thousands of dollars and volunteer hours to United Cerebral Palsy of San Diego.     Lawyers Club of San Diego, which for more than 50 years has advocated for the advancement of women in law and society, mourns the loss of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a feminist, legal scholar and powerful dissenter, who died Sept, 18 at age 87.
    As a national leader in pursuing equality for all, the state of California should honor Justice Ginsburg with a state holiday in her name. Lawyers Club of San Diego calls on Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a state holiday for this remarkable pioneer, and we suggest that the holiday be set for March 15, Justice Ginsburg’s birth date, or Aug. 10, the date she was sworn in to the Supreme Court as the second woman to serve on the high court.
    Justice Ginsburg had an exemplary legal career that burst open doors of opportunity for many. She became the first female professor to earn tenure at Columbia Law School. She launched the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). On behalf of the ACLU, she argued six landmark cases before the Supreme Court and won five of those cases.
    She argued against automatic exemptions from jury service that resulted in a paucity of women serving on jury trials. She argued for the rights of widowers and husbands to receive Social Security benefits. She argued for the right of female military personnel to have their husbands qualify for military spousal dependency based on their wives’ military service.


    As a tribute to Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s 40th anniversary, the California State office of MADD will host its signature fundraising Walk Like MADD ceremony virtually on Saturday, Oct. 10 beginning at noon on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube @MADDCalifornia. MADD asks you to join these virtual events and take a stand with #OneMADDCalifornia.     Air traffic at San Diego International Airport is rebounding, but gradually. Sabrina LoPiccolo, airport senior communications specialist, gave these post-COVID numbers for airport traffic:
    April: Passenger traffic through the TSA checkpoints was down as much as 95 percent.
    July: Passenger traffic through TSA checkpoints was down 74 percent. 
    August: Passenger traffic through TSA checkpoints was down 71 percent.
    September to date: Passenger traffic through TSA checkpoints is down 67 percent.
    “Since COVID-19, we saw the most passengers through the TSA checkpoints on Sept. 4, (15,334),” LoPiccolo said.


    SoulCycle is bringing SoulOutside to Westfield UTC, beginning this week for an eight-week series.     On Thursday morning, Sept. 17, the City of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s Lifeguard Division will conduct a tryout session for applicants interested in becoming ocean and bay seasonal lifeguards. In order to be considered for admittance into the lifeguard training program, prospective recruits must complete a 500-meter swim in less than 10 minutes. These applicants will also have the opportunity to interact with current and former SDFD lifeguards, and view some of the equipment they will use during their lifeguard careers.
    “Lifeguarding in San Diego isn’t just sun and sandy beaches. Lifeguards must be physically and mentally ready to respond to an emergency at any time,” said Lifeguard Chief James Gartland. “For those who can meet the demands of the job and become a lifeguard, I guarantee they will never have more rewarding or unique job experience.” 
    With more than 40 miles of oceanfront and bay shoreline to patrol throughout the City, SDFD lifeguards help keep an average of 17 million visitors safe and conduct an estimated 7,000 rescues at local beaches each year. Additionally, lifeguards manage cliff, scuba and swift water rescues, enforce boating safety regulations, and respond to emergencies involving seafaring vessels and other watercraft.


    Pacific Beach Town Council’s next weed abatement project will be Saturday, Sept. 26 starting at 7 a.m. This next weed abatement project is the Pacific Beach portion of Soledad Mountain Road, where weeds are rampant on the medians and sidewalks. The PBTC volunteer table will be at the corner of Soledad Mountain Road and Beryl Street, where volunteers can pick up tools and supplies. Please bring this waiver to the event (waivers will also be available at the sign-up table).
    It is recommended that volunteers bring gardening gloves, sunscreen, visors or hats, and drinking water. Masks are mandatory when working near other people.     The Rosin Box Project will launch its new virtual subscription available starting Sept. 12. The first installment, on Sept. 18, is the IN FOCUS Film Series, a month-long series of original dance film premieres with one mission: to propel contemporary ballet in San Diego from the stage to the big screen. The Rosin Box Project collaborated with several local San Diego filmmakers to create original and visually striking art films that lend fresh perspectives to contemporary ballet and grant new access to the performance art during this time of quarantining and social distancing.

    At a Sept. 3 Zoom meeting with more than 70 participants, La Jolla Community Planning Association, which makes land-use recommendations to the City, voted 13-2-2 after extensive public debate to support a home redevelopment for Ted and MaryAnn Pintar at 7342 Remley Place. The project calls for demolition of an existing 3,196-square-foot single-family home and replacement by a new 4,923-square-foot single-family home.
    Several neighbors expressed their concerns about the possibility of the project’s impairing views, and about a planned garage some fear will pose access and safety problems in the neighborhood. Following the meeting, LJCPA trustee David Little resigned from the group in a letter reading: “The LJCPA has recently voted to approve projects that will result in code violations when built. This is never a good policy, but it is a particularly bad policy at this time when community planning groups are struggling to be relevant.”

    Gregory Smith, a human resources manager with community college leadership experience, has been named vice chancellor of human resources for the San Diego Community College District. In his role leading SDCCD Human Resources, Smith will oversee a team that directly supports a district with nearly 5,000 employees across three credit colleges and a large noncredit division.     Liberty Station has announced that two of its high-profile tenants, The Lot movie theatre and Corvette Diner restaurant, have reopened. The LOT is now open for indoor movie showings and dining. The luxury cinema has joined CinemaSafe, a national coalition of theaters, to promote the safe return of moviegoers and employees. Alongside leading epidemiologists, this industry-specific organization developed a program of health and safety protocols that address the unique environment of movie theaters. Corvette Diner , a ’50s-themed eatery, reopened for indoor dining.     San Diego Humane Society has acquired the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona from the Humane Society of the United States. The 13-acre wildlife center provides care to wildlife, including native apex predators such as bears, bobcats, coyotes and birds of prey. With this additional center, known as Project Wildlife — Ramona, SDHS will expand its lifesaving capacity to rescue, rehabilitate and release additional species of injured and orphaned wildlife throughout San Diego County. It will also continue to care for 29 of the center’s existing ambassador animals, including a bear, bobcats, snakes and a pygmy hippo.
    “This a big step for wildlife and our environmentally conscious community,” said SDHS president Dr. Gary Weitzman. “By bringing this exceptional wildlife and conservation program into the lifesaving work of Project Wildlife, we’ll be able to care for many more orphaned or injured wild species from hummingbirds and owls to bobcats and coyotes.”

    The return of football is this week, and Mavericks Beach Club is where you’ll catch all the action this season.     San Diego County Credit Union is hosting a blood drive on Sept. 8 at its 3455 Sports Arena Blvd. branch from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic there is currently an extremely low inventory of blood, hospital shelves are almost empty, and this short supply is affecting thousands of patients.     Following more than two decades serving traditional Greek cuisine in Coronado, Spiro’s Greek Café will soon launch a second location in La Jolla.     A new citizen advocacy group Don't Trash Mission Beach,, has been formed. The new group has announced a beach cleanup for South Mission Beach, along with a beach trash art exhibit-installation to bring awareness of beach trash and its impact on the environment, on Saturday, Sept. 12 starting at 7 a.m. at Belmont Park on the boardwalk south of the roller coaster.
    The advocacy group promotes 'Pack It In and Pack It Out' along with personal responsibility and hopes that a community-visitor trash awareness campaign can precipitate change for Mission Beach. The event is presented by Don't Trash Mission Beach, Friends of Beautiful Mission Beach, and is sponsored by Belmont Park, The Felice Agency, Olive Baking Company, and ScootScoop. In addition, Pacific Beach Town Council and The Mighty Bin, a Zero Waste store, will be in attendance. 
    The event will occur during Coastal Clean-Up Month and National Cleanup Day. The beach cleanup will begin at 7:30 a.m. when volunteers will meet at the park and clean the beach and surrounding area until 11:30 a.m. Bags, gloves, grabbers, and sanitizers will be provided. Everyone will wear masks and observe social distancing. The Beach Art-Trash Exhibit will showcase from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. The display will feature rescued items such as hundreds of shoes, towels, toys, and personal items.     Politifest, an annual public affairs summit produced by Voice of San Diego and launched in 2011, will take place virtually during the week of Sept. 29 through Oct. 3.     Friday, Aug. 28

    Pacific Beach Town Council is seeking volunteers for weed abatement in the community on Saturday, Aug. 29 starting at 7 a.m. Overgrown weeds were recently removed by volunteer PBTC board members from a section of the median on Mission Bay Drive by the I-5 south on-ramp. Help is needed to tackle the rest. A volunteer sign-in table will be at the parking lot west of Mission Bay Drive near the entrance to Mission Bay Park. Donations to help defray the cost of tools, supplies, dump fees, and extra materials for this and future weed removal projects involving large groups of community volunteers is welcomed.


    Extra tools for volunteers to use will be purchased, but bring your own tools if you have them. Loppers are highly recommended for the thicker weed stalks. Other handy tools include push brooms, shovels, and large dustpans. Contractor-grade garbage bags will be provided. It is recommended volunteers bring gardening gloves, sunscreen, visors or hats, and drinking water. Masks are mandatory. PBTC board members Charlie Nieto, Susan Crowers, Ron Walker, and Brian White took to the task of removing overgrown weeds from a small section of Mission Bay Drive this last Saturday.

    Fiesta Island Dog Owners (FIDO) has had to cancel all of its three traditional I Love a Clean San Diego cleanups in 2020. The most recent cleanup event was October 2019, and there probably won't be another one until early 2021, if then. But that doesn't mean cleanup isn't needed. The beaches are being used heavily and Fiesta Island is extremely popular.
    This year, the California Coastal Commission is expanding its usual Coastal Cleanup Day throughout September, and FIDO would like to invite all of members to participate. There are no large, centrally organized cleanups this year. Instead, every day that you can in September, bring along extra bags when you visit the island and pick up any trash you see – or a few of those extra poop piles that sometimes get overlooked.     San Diego Blood Bank is issuing a call to the public to make appointments to donate blood in the coming months to avoid a severe dip in donations due to the hiatus of school blood drives due to COVID-19. As back to school season approaches, many districts will be hosting classes online and not hosting their regular blood drives. San Diego Blood Bank is working with schools on creative avenues to support blood donation, such as community drives. However, high school and college blood drives would normally start this week meaning the loss of hundreds of pints of blood.  
    Approximately 20% of the blood SDBB normally collects comes from high schools and colleges,” said San Diego Blood Bank CEO David Wellis. “It’s critically important that we make up for those pints we would have collected at schools, so we need people to make appointments for the next couple of months.” To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 114 pounds and be in generally good health. Appointments are required and available at or by calling 619-400-8251. 


    As Goodwill retail stores and donation centers reopen, program participants continue to be brought back to work. On March 15, the organization was asked to close due to the coronavirus pandemic. Prior to the shutdown, the nonprofit employed 1,400 community members. Today, Goodwill San Diego employs 894 people in San Diego County, 47.2% of whom are persons with a disability or other barriers to employment. Goodwill San Diego’s social enterprise gratefully accepts donations of clothing, shoes, home décor, household items, small appliances, electronics, sporting goods, and furniture.     Two wooden benches on the 7900 block of Girard Avenue were vandalized recently with missing wooden planks as a result. A police report has been filed and the La Jolla Maintenance Assessment District (MAD) is working with SDPD Northern Division to investigate. La Jolla MAD recently began a pilot project to refurbish these wooden benches in the Village, which is why there are recent photos of the benches and a numbered catalog of benches corresponding to their location and a notation of the memorial placard on each bench.     Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), delivered a special videotaped briefing and update on COVID-19 at the American Veterinarian Medical Association’s (AVMA) first-ever virtual annual convention, Aug. 20-22. Speaking to thousands of veterinarians, Fauci explained how approximately three-quarters of all emerging infectious diseases in human health have their origins in animals. These zoonotic diseases include SARS, H1N1 flu, and, most recently, COVID-19. Fauci praised the industry for its ‘One Health’ approach in addressing the challenges posed by these emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases, recognizing that human health is connected to the health of animals and our shared environment.     Aug. 26 was Women’s Equality Day to culminate the centennial celebration of the 19th Amendment. Over the past several months, the entire country paused to recognize the courageous work of thousands of women who fought and won the right to cast a ballot at the polls. The 19th amendment is a major milestone for voting rights but not the endpoint. Remember that not all women were granted the right to vote in 1920. It would be decades before women of color could celebrate their victory with the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
    Today, the fight for voting rights feels as relevant as ever. Disappearing mailboxes, malfunctioning voting machines, and long lines at the polls are modern-day barriers for the disenfranchised. Let’s continue the work of making America a country where every voice counts – where every woman, every human, can live free.

Meal at 6 p.m. Graduate and undergraduate nursing students staff the free clinics that provide medical services, nursing care, mental health services, case management and social services to uninsured and under-insured people in Southern California under the direction of medical professionals and faculty.

    The Peninsula Singers community choir welcomes singers with all levels of experience to join them for their fall season, which starts on Monday, Sept. 14. No audition is needed. Due to the current Coronavirus situation, this will be an online semester. The choir will meet on Zoom at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays for a community singalong, or ‘zoomalong.’ of a variety of songs – traditional songs, folk songs, camp songs, patriotic songs, spirituals, etc. – before transitioning to holiday music in November and December.     The choir is directed by Sarah Suhonen and accompanied by Stewart Simon on piano. The choir has performed at many venues throughout the community including U.S.S. Midway, the Point Loma Village Cultural Faire, Southwestern Yacht Club, Point Loma High School, several local libraries, and December Nights in Balboa Park. They have also performed at Carnegie Hall and the European cities of Prague, Salzburg, Vienna and Munich. Last year, the choir went on tour in Ireland.

    The local family behind Puesto Mexican Artisan Kitchen & Bar is venturing into Italian cuisine for their next restaurant, which will be adjacent to the 1026 Wall St. location of their popular Mexican eatery. Naming the new restaurant Marisi Italiano after their grandparents, Isidoro and Marila, brothers Eric, Alan, and Alex Adler, and cousins Isi and Moy have signed a lease for the neighboring Whisknladle space, which shuttered in May after 12 years in La Jolla.

    The University of California San Diego has been recognized as both elite and affordable in Money Magazine’s annual ranking of the best colleges in America, ranked by value. The university placed third among public universities and ninth among 739 institutions in the nation. The ranking is based on graduation rates, the number of Pell Grant recipients, net costs to attend and alumni salary data. Each institution was ranked based on 26 factors in three categories — quality, affordability and outcomes — but this year, Money Magazine changed their rankings formula to put more emphasis on affordability, increasing the weight given to the affordability metrics to 40%.

    In an effort to help residents stay healthy, combat loneliness and improve their lives, the City of San Diego and Sharp HealthCare recently launched a community education video series available for free online. Sharp HealthCare is the City’s official health and wellness partner. The new virtual series will replace in-person sessions previously offered at City libraries.
    Topics for the online workshops include advance care planning, diabetes prevention, back pain management and dealing with isolation. The sessions are free and will be available on YouTube with the option to view captions in English or Spanish.     Pacific Beach Town Council is seeking volunteers for weed abatement in the community on Saturday, Aug. 29 starting at 7 a.m. Overgrown weeds were recently removed by volunteer PBTC board members from a section of median on Mission Bay Drive by the I-5 south on-ramp.  Help is needed to tackle the rest. Donations to help defray the cost of tools, supplies, dump fees, and extra materials for this and future weed removal projects involving large groups of community volunteers are welcomed.


    Extra tools for volunteers to use will be purchased, but bring your own tools if you have them.  Loppers are highly recommended for the thicker weed stalks. Other handy tools include push brooms, shovels, and large dustpans. Contractor-grade garbage bags will be provided. It is recommended volunteers bring gardening gloves, sunscreen, visors or hats, and drinking water. Masks are mandatory.     San Diego Humane Society’s Emergency Response Team deployed today to Monterey to support a local animal shelter displaced by the River Fire. Once there, team members will provide animal care for farm animals evacuated by Monterey SPCA. The six-member team left San Diego Campus at 5500 Gaines Street at 1 p.m.

    As part of its ongoing effort to ensure that voters and election officials have the information they need to successfully use the U.S. mail to vote in the November general elections, the U.S. Postal Service has launched a new Election Mail website. The website, which provides clear and concise information about voting by mail, is available 24/7 by going to
    The Postal Service recognizes that many states are choosing to expand mail-in voting options in the upcoming elections and that there will likely be a significant increase in demand among postal customers to participate in those elections by using the mail. In response, the Postal Service has updated its website to serve both voting customers seeking information on how to use the mail to vote and election officials seeking resources to help make their administration of the upcoming elections a success.
    For domestic voters, the website provides direct links to federal election resources as well as links to state-specific resources. For overseas and military voters, the new site provides additional information, including links to resources supporting their election participation. The site also highlights what the Postal Service views as the most critical information for voters who opt to vote through the U.S. mail: that, in requesting or casting a mail-in ballot, they not only must comply with their local jurisdictions’ requirements but also should start the process early.
    To allow sufficient time for voters to receive, complete and return ballots via the mail, the Postal Service strongly recommends that voters request ballots at the earliest point allowable, but no later than 15 days prior to the election date. The Postal Service also recommends that voters mail their ballots at least one week prior to their states’ due dates to allow for timely receipt by election officials. Voters should contact their local election officials for further information about deadlines and other requirements.

    Airports Council International-North America awarded San Diego County Regional Airport Authority with an Environmental Achievement Award in the area of outreach, education, and communication for the organization’s Airport Development Plan outreach efforts. The ADP envisions the replacement of Terminal 1 with a more modern facility and other improvements that enhance the airport experience for everyone. The Airport Authority’s ADP Draft Environmental Impact Report was originally released in July 2018 and then revised and recirculated in September 2019. For more than a year, the Airport Authority worked with regional stakeholders to refine the ADP. The Airport Authority Board certified the final EIR on Jan. 9.
    While the ADP was approved to move forward in January, the impacts of COVID-19 have given the Airport Authority pause to re-evaluate all capital improvement projects, including the ADP.  To date, the Airport Authority has put more than $220 million of airport Capital Improvement Projects on hold and continues to proceed very cautiously with all aspects of the ADP. There is flexibility to slow down, speed up, or stop work completely if needed.  


    Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52) and 116 other members sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer urging them to take up a vote this Saturday on legislation to extend unemployment benefits to those who need it and ensure benefits last for the duration of the recession by tying enhanced unemployment insurance to the health crisis and economic indicators.


    Sharp HealthCare announced that a new video will be released Monday, Aug. 24, as part of the series of free virtual workshops for San Diego residents presented by Sharp, the Official Health and Wellness Partner of the City of San Diego. Workshops were previously held at libraries and recreation centers in each of the nine City of San Diego districts and were moved online in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.     For the third year, the Jewish Community Foundation is proud to have facilitated the Making A Difference for San Diego grant initiative on behalf of the Cushman Foundation, deploying $1.55 million in grants to 11 deserving organizations in San Diego County. All 2020 recipients demonstrated their impact through sustainable programs and/or services provided to veterans, seniors, or children. The Making a Difference for San Diego Grant Program was established in 2018 to provide grants up to $100,000 to at least 10 local organizations.
    Through the generosity of the Cushman Foundation, $1.2 million was granted to 15 organizations. Committed to providing funding for much-needed services to diverse communities and elevating or creating new programs that truly make a difference, the Cushman Foundation granted another $1.2 million to 19 organizations in 2019.

    The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to distribute $25 million of CARES Act funding to eligible childcare providers in San Diego County this fall. To distribute the funds, San Diego County has partnered with The San Diego Foundation, YMCA of San Diego County and Child Development Associates. This coalition of partners will come together at a press conference on Aug. 20 to announce details about the Childcare Provider Grant Program and provide information about how childcare providers can apply.
    The San Diego County Childcare Provider Grant Program will provide funding to help keep childcare centers safe and allow them to remain open as families seek care for their children. The application will be available at starting Aug. 24. Childcare providers will have 10 days to submit the information required for funding. Childcare providers can apply for support for staffing, supplies, mortgage and rental assistance, business resilience and capital improvements for outdoor areas.


    Maritime Museum of San Diego, serving as the community memory of our seafaring experience by collecting, preserving, and presenting our rich maritime heritage and historic connections with the Pacific world, will reopen to the public Aug. 22. The Maritime Museum reopened to the public for six days July 1-6 after closing temporarily due to the global pandemic for nearly four months starting March 16.     Liberty StationRock Church, and USO San Diego will honor active duty service members and their families at the second annual Military Heroes Festival Saturday, Aug, 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Liberty Station with free groceries, giveaways, stuffed backpacks, clothing, family-friendly entertainment, and more. The festival-style event was transformed this year to a safe, drive-through-style event that will keep families in their cars throughout the experience and allow pre-screened, masked volunteers to engage with families while socially distancing.
    Entertainment includes live superheroes and popular characters placed throughout the route as well as FM transmitted messages from Rock Church, USO San Diego, and Commanding Officer Kenneth R. Franklin of Naval Base Point Loma. Families are pre-registered via USO San Diego and given a time slot at which to arrive. The route will take families 30-45 minutes to complete and spans across the south side of Liberty Station near Rosecrans Street and Womble Road, ending on the north side alongside NTC Park and Cushing Road.


    This Saturday, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m. to noon, people from all walks of life who are determined to defend the essential services provided by the United States Postal Service — including our ability to vote by mail — will push back on the Trump administration’s attacks by organizing a grassroots action at post offices throughout San Diego, and throughout the country, including one outside the Pacific Beach Post Office at 4640 Cass St. Groups including Indivisible, the Leadership Conference on Civil & Human Rights, MoveOn, NAACP,, Service Employees International Union, Vets for the People, and the Working Families Party are participating.
    Those joining the actions will call on Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to resign in the wake of mail slowdowns and will call on Congress to “protect and save the post office from Donald Trump” and act to safeguard the integrity of our mail and elections. The actions will show Americans coming together to stand up for a postal system that connects us, that we rely on for medications, paychecks, and more, and that will literally be counted on to deliver democracy in the elections this fall. To promote safety given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the action will take place outdoors and have a physical distancing plan, and attendees will be asked to wear masks.

    The San Diego Padres are teaming up with EnMotive, producers of the Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k series, to launch the first Friar 5k Virtual Race. All participants will receive a goodie bag featuring Padres-branded swag and themed 5k finishers medal, plus a baseball hat and more. The Friar 5k is a 3.1-mile virtual race in which participants have the option to run or walk the five-kilometer distance on the treadmill, sidewalk, or trail.     Torrey Pines Church in La Jolla and Saddleback San Diego Church will partner for a drive-thru, free grocery distribution from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 31, at the Torrey Pines Church parking lot, 8320 La Jolla Scenic Drive North. Free canned and nonperishable food items will be available for families who have been affected by the virus pandemic.

    The Rock ‘N’ Roll San Diego Marathon and half-marathon, originally scheduled for May 30-31 but indefinitely postponed, has been officially canceled and rescheduled for next year. “Unfortunately, after assessing all event scenarios and based on the continued mandate from the State of California, the [marathon] cannot take place in 2020,” said organizers in a statement. “The event will return on June 5-6, 2021.     Cancer immunotherapy, empowering a patient’s own immune system to clear away tumors on its own, holds great promise for some patients. But for other patients, immunotherapy just doesn’t work. Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine have found evidence that helps explain why patients who are young and/or female have especially low response rates to some types of cancer immunotherapy. Their findings suggest that since the typically robust immune systems of young and female patients are better at getting rid of tumor cells, the cells left behind are not as readily visible to the immune system, to begin with, rendering some types of immunotherapy ineffective. The study was published in Nature Communications.
    “Now that we know why some patients don’t respond as well to immunotherapy, we can begin developing more informed approaches to treatment decisions, for instance, developing predictive algorithms to determine a person’s likely response before initiating immunotherapies that may have a high probability of not working or working poorly for them,” said senior author Hannah Carter, PhD, associate professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine.     Diana: A True Musical Story,” a La Jolla Playhouse-born show, which premiered in Weiss Theatre a year-and-a-half ago during the 2018-19 season, will be filmed for Netflix and will air nationwide in early 2021. The production will be filmed without an audience on the stage of the Longacre Theatre next month. Helmed once again by Christopher Ashley, the play will feature the original Broadway cast, including Jeanna de Waal as Diana, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles and two-time Tony Award-winner Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth. All of them starred in the La Jolla Playhouse production in 2019.
    This marks the first time a theatrical event will have its streaming premiere before its opening night on Broadway. “Diana” transferred to Broadway following its sold-out, extended run at La Jolla Playhouse. The show went on hiatus due to the pandemic before its scheduled Broadway opening on March 31. The musical is now set to open on Broadway in May 2021.

    The County of San Diego Vector Control Program will conduct aerial mosquito larvicide applications on  Wednesday, Aug. 19, and Thursday, Aug. 20, to reduce mosquito breeding and decrease the risk of West Nile virus transmission. Granules of larvicide will be applied via helicopter to specific waterways known to breed mosquitoes throughout the San Diego region. The larvicide consists of naturally occurring bacteria that target mosquito larvae but are safe to people, pets, plants, and wildlife. 
    VCP staff will be at the locations during the applications to answer questions and monitor progress. Depending on conditions, aerial mosquito larvicide applications will occur every 3-4 weeks or as needed during the mosquito season from April through October. The best protection against WNV and other mosquito-borne illnesses is to prevent mosquito breeding and mosquito bites. Stevenson Gallery in La Jolla at 7661 Girard Ave., will exhibit “Here & Now” featuring new and recent paintings by San Diego artist Wayne Hulgin and Los Angeles artist Chris Trueman. The opening reception for the artists will be Saturday Aug. 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. The gallery will be open at noon for early viewing.     The Mighty 1090, is set to return to the airwaves Monday, Aug. 17 with a brand-new identity as The Mightier 1090.     One Paseo, the mixed-use development in San Diego’s Carmel Valley, is making a large monetary donation totaling $107,000 to eight neighboring school districts, including San Diego Unified School District.     With a vision of bringing life to an underutilized four-block area near Petco Park in the East Village, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer announced on Sept. 23 that the Padres Development Team – including partners Tishman Speyer and Ascendant Capital Partners – have won the competitive bidding process to transform Tailgate Park into a vibrant, mixed-use destination called East Village Quarter.

    Across from Petco Park, Faulconer was joined by Padres president Erik Greupner, Tishman Speyer senior managing director Paul DeMartini, Ascendant Capital Partners CEO Russell Gimelstob and community supporters for the announcement.

    The decision comes after a selection committee of City of San Diego staff and external experts at Civic San Diego and Jones Lang Lasalle (JLL) reviewed and scored the two top bids to the request for proposals (RFP) to redevelop the four blocks between K Street and Imperial Avenue and 12th Avenue and 14th Street in San Diego’s East Village neighborhood. Scoring categories included responsiveness to the RFP, financial models and developer experience. The RFP process followed a public request for qualifications (RFQ) process in spring 2020.

    The Padres Development Team is comprised of local and international leaders that specialize in sports, transit-centered and mixed-use development, urban design and finance. The team’s initial vision for the site is a vibrant and exciting destination that includes housing, public space, retail and office space that is designed to attract innovation economy companies to downtown.

    Additionally, the team’s vision includes the creation of a 1,600-space parking structure – 600 more parking spaces than currently exist on the site today – that protects the long-term parking needs of San Diegans attending Padres games and other events at the City-owned Petco Park.

    “The Padres have helped revitalize East Village through the construction and continuous improvement of Petco Park. We are excited to partner with our development team to further revitalize East Village through our vision for this site, which will enhance the game day experience for our fans and transform the Ballpark District,” Greupner said. “We look forward to creating a world-class destination that includes jobs, housing and recreation in addition to meeting the long-term parking needs of Padres fans and others attending events at the ballpark.” 

    From Aug. 26 to Sept. 4, the City held a virtual open house to solicit public input on two development proposals and community priorities for the development. The open house website received more than 12,000 views and 1,156 community feedback responses on what they’d like to see on the property and the most desired aspects of each proposal. Highest priorities for the community included open space and amenities, retail, parking, events and active pedestrian and public space.

    “What the Padres have done over the years to create an atmosphere of fun, excitement and energy at Petco Park is incredible, and now, with Tishman Speyer and Ascendant Capital Partners, they’ll be able to expand their footprint and the positive impact they have on the surrounding community even further,” Faulconer said. “Block by block we’re breathing new life into the East Village and making it a vibrant district for San Diegans and visitors alike to enjoy.”

    Faulconer also directed the immediate release of documents related to the selection process to provide full transparency as the City moves forward with the process. The documents include:

    The next steps for the project include taking the Selection Committee’s recommendation for the City to enter into an Exclusive Negotiation Agreement with the Padres for consideration to the City Council’s Economic Development and Intergovernmental Relations Committee and subsequently to the City Council.

    Laurel McFarlane is spending her son’s college money next year to keep her household afloat.

    Sandi Cottrell has had to cancel the ArtWalk she’s promoted at Liberty Station the past 16 years, praying her business will survive to do it next year.

    Michelle Metter’s husband’s business has been devastated by COVID, and her efforts to hold her young family together she described as “dire.”

    All three women have joined with other live event promoters in a local movement, The San Diego Events Coalition, that is part of a national movement at

    The three event promoters have a message to deliver: Live events in San Diego are barely alive, and won’t be for much longer without immediate governmental aid and federal financial assistance.

    McFarlane, of McFarlane Promotions, who usually promotes about 70 San Diego events a year, is down to only five virtual events this year due to COVID. She characterized her present circumstances, and those of the rest of San Diego’s small-business event industry, as “brutal” and “catastrophic.”

    “Promoting a live event takes 100 to 500 people – stagehands, bar staff, graphics designers, lighting crew, insurance reps – the list goes on and on,” McFarlane said. “Everyone is suffering. We’re the only industry that has zero things open.”

    Said Cottrell, of ArtWalk San Diego, “We held out hope as long as we could that we could reschedule the art walk in August that has 200 fine artists, live music, wine and beer pavilion, art for kids and art displays for November. We tried to come up with something the county would accept with a very different format: no music, no kids, no wine, and beer, just sale of art. We’d gotten some very positive feedback but our timing was terrible, (it was) back in July when the big (COVID) spike happened. The writing was on the wall.”

    Metter, of Fast Forward Events, annually promotes the week-long San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival featuring dozens of events and hundreds of domestic and international wineries with a Grand Tasting Finale in November at Embarcadero Marina Park North. Metter said her “overriding frustration” is with inconsistencies in which businesses are allowed to operate, and which are not.

    “Swap meets and farmers markets are being allowed to reopen,” Metter pointed out. “Yet they won’t allow functions to be held by professional event organizers with professional management companies who have been doing so within the City for many years.”

    Added Metter, “This impacts not just the City from the loss of economic drivers from events, but the personal toll taken on the live events workforce, which is now largely unemployed. That segment of the workforce just isn’t recognized by our state legislature. It’s very short-sighted.”

    McFarlane warned that the COVID response canceling live events could exterminate the entire industry. “We can’t get anybody to listen,” she lamented. “We need to start gradually getting our industry back so people can still make a living.”

    McFarlane noted there’s a considerable lag time in promoting and implementing live events.

    “You just can’t open tomorrow,” she said. “We’re at least three months out from getting everything together to do an event with all the permitting and everything required. We’re talking about 2021 now.”

    Asked McFarlane, “If people are allowed to go to swap meets and farmers markets, why can’t we be allowed to open and host small live events like art walks, car shows, and food tastings?”

    The San Diego Events Coalition has been busy recently crafting a long list of reasonable health guidelines that would allow the industry to reopen before it’s too late to matter.

    “We’re just really trying to find a safe way back for the 200,000 people in San Diego who are screaming out for help, and for the $329 million the live events industry contributes to the economy,” McFarlane said.

    What happens if live event promotions are lost?

    “If we’re not here, all these nonprofits will start to pay full price for events that have been discounted,” McFarlane said adding, “And no one is saying, ‘Oh my God, they’re wiping out this entire industry.’”

    McFarlane said people aren’t aware of just how irreplaceable the live event industry is.

    “They show up at an event and it’s magical,” she said. “But they don’t realize how the event planners have worked through the nights to make that happen, and all the hard work by all the people it takes for us to make that ‘magic moment’ for the public.”

    What needs to be done?

    “Right now, there needs to be some events opening,” answered McFarlane. “The coalition has developed 30 pages of guidelines for reopening, and elected officials really need to help us.”

    Concluded McFarlane, “We’re not getting aid from Congress any time soon. The work I’ve spent the past 20 years doing, 90% of that has been wiped out. At this point, I don’t have a road map back at all. We need help to find a safe way back following the detailed protocols we’ve created. We need people to say, ‘We’re sorry we have forgotten about you. We’re going to help you.' I don’t think that’s too much to ask.”

    Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego is reopening to the public on Sept. 15. 

    The aquarium, which closed March 12, and reopened briefly in July, will open with new pathways and new procedures to keep guests and staff safe and healthy. Guest capacity will be limited, so advanced reservations are required for all guests, including members. Timed tickets are available online here. 
    “We are confident that we have created a safe and healthy environment for our guests as well as our staff and we look forward to reopening Birch Aquarium and welcoming back our members and guests,” said executive director Harry Helling. 

    In addition to requiring face coverings for all staff and guests ages 2 and up, Birch Aquarium has implemented safety screenings for guests; created a one-way pathway to encourage social distancing; increased the number of handwashing and sanitizing stations; and upgraded its HVAC system.  As an added safety measure, Birch Aquarium staff will also be completing daily symptom screenings, as well as frequent COVID-19 testing. 

    Birch Aquarium is home to more than 6,000 ocean animals. Guests are encouraged to greet some of their favorites like the Weedy Seadragons and rescued Loggerhead Sea Turtle. They can also discover new species like the Ornate Boxfish, a unique fish that made a splash on social media during the temporary closure. 

    During this initial reopening phase, activities where large numbers of people typically gather, such as dive shows and feedings, have been canceled. High-touch exhibit elements such as the water tables, playground, and touch screens have also been removed, though many exhibits have newly-integrated QR codes to allow guests to engage in new ways from the safety of their cell phones. 

    In October, Birch Aquarium is planning to launch an outdoor Halloween-themed celebration that will continue even if the indoor areas of the aquarium have to close to meet state and local COVID-19 guidelines. 

    “With the Halloween celebration, we are working to create a fun and engaging seasonal 'outdoor aquarium' experience that will allow us to serve our community, even if our indoor spaces have to close,” said Helling. “Continuing to offer the aquarium as a resource to the community is our goal.” Details of the Halloween celebration will be announced soon. 

    During the temporary closure, the aquarium began offering a series of virtual programs including virtual summer camps, which were so successful that the aquarium is now launching a suite of new virtual education programs. Virtual Youth and School Group Programs will be available now to groups of students, including schools, homeschool groups, after school programs, and scout groups.  A Virtual After School Series will be offered in the fall, winter, and spring to individuals in kindergarten through grade 8. Registration for the after school fall series begins Sept. 14.

    If you are an active registered voter, you can now sign up to track the status of your mail ballot ­ – when the ballot is mailed to you, when the Registrar of Voters gets it back from you in the mail and when it is counted.

    Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, every active registered voter in California will receive a ballot in the mail for the Nov. 3 Presidential General Election.

    The ballot tracking tool is new. Voters can sign up for Where’s My Ballot? at to receive automatic email, text, or call notification on the status of their ballot.

    It’s also a good idea for voters to double-check their registration in the next couple of weeks to make sure the Registrar of Voters sends the mail ballot to the correct address.

    The Registrar of Voters office will be preparing ballots for the mail by mid-September, and ballots will start going out to registered voters the week of Oct. 5. If your voter information is up to date you should expect to receive your ballot the same week.

    Voting by mail is simple, safer, and secure. The Registrar of Voters has launched an awareness campaign, Vote Safer San Diego, to educate the public on the safety, security and ease of voting in the upcoming election amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Those who want to vote in person will still have the opportunity to do so, but they may run into long lines, both at the polls and the Registrar’s office.
