From the best surf town to the best city for coffee fanatics, San Diego has been listed as a favorite more than a dozen times by publications such as Surfer Magazine, Culture Trip, Best Cities, and SmartAsset. In October, San Diego was once again featured in the spotlight during the Flight Network’s The World’s 50 Most Beautiful Cities campaign, ranking at No. 22, ahead of Madrid, Athens, and Jerusalem. “It’s certainly not the first time we’ve gotten recognition from editorial media or travel sites or even public opinion polls,” said Candice Eley, director of communications at San Diego Tourism Authority. “I think it’s pretty clear from anyone who lives here, that’s part of why we live here — the amazing landscapes, how diverse the city is, how you can go from the beach to the desert foothills in the span of an hour.” According to the Tourism Authority, visitors passing through San Diego spend roughly $11.5 billion every year. That amount of cash might make sense since the city also hosts 35.8 million visitors annually. Jam-packed to the brim with seaside taco shops (and trucks), breweries and beaches — not to mention the ample wine country hot-spots and historic towns — San Diego’s daytime and nighttime activities are virtually endless. “Something we also hear a lot from visitors is how clean our city is,” said Eley, who has lived in San Diego since 2004. “For the size of a major U.S. city, it can be really a really surprising thing to visitors how nice the streets and buildings are. I think that, plus how culturally dynamic our city is, helps a lot with our reputation.” The Flight Network, which asked the opinions of more than 1,000 travel writers, travel bloggers and travel agencies from all around the globe, raved about historic Balboa Park, home to “several different museums (as well as the famous San Diego Zoo) and tons of green spaces for biking, walking, or just frolicking around.” Eley says that while San Diego has always been known for its beaches and margaritas, in the last few years it’s starting to be more recognized for its musical performing arts and culinary expertise. “It’s something that’s been long overdue,” she said. But despite being the eighth-largest city in the country, San Diego is a surprisingly cozy, coastal, laid-back, beach-goer paradise with ample fine dining and tourist attractions, from Little Italy to Old Town, to Gaslamp Quarter to La Jolla. “That’s actually part of how we describe San Diego when we’re doing marketing promotions as a travel destination,” said Eley. “We talk about San Diego being a beach-city so it’s a combination of that easy-going, coastal, chill lifestyle vibe that you’d expect from a small-town beach destination, but it’s paired with great nightlife. It’s that combination that makes us special and unique.” Flight Network’s The World’s 50 Most Beautiful Cities 1. Paris 2. New York 3. London 4. Venice 5. Vancouver 6. Barcelona 7. Cape Town 8. While some legends fade away, others continue to stay fresh in people's minds and become even more popular over time. Take the two-story Whaley House Museum in Old Town. The house, which was constructed in 1857 and is a historical landmark, is where numerous ghost sightings have been reported for decades. A brick monument to early San Diego, the home was built by Thomas Whaley, who was a pioneer and prominent citizen, once serving as president of the board of trustees and earning the nickname “Mayor Whaley.” Whaley was additionally a merchant and real estate agent and the house was designed by him and constructed of bricks made in his own brickyard. According to Dean Glass, Whaley House Museum historian: “In its day, the house was a hub of social activity, with its brick construction, fireplaces, and large rooms being very attractive to 19th-century San Diegans accustomed to small adobe houses. It served as the first commercial theater in San Diego; San Diego’s second county courthouse and seat of justice; and Thomas Whaley’s general store, all of which have been returned to the museum for visitors to see today.” In addition to serving as historian, Glass is a member of the museum’s curatorial team, as well as the administrative manager for Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO), which operates the museum on behalf of its owner the County of San Diego. “I have worked at Whaley House for just over 15 years. I have been a fan of the museum since first touring as part of a fourth-grade field trip in 1975,” Glass said. SOHO’s executive director Bruce Coons is the director of the Whaley House and has been since 2000. As one of the oldest brick houses in Southern California and San Diego’s finest example of a mid-1800s brick mansion, it has been designated California Historical Landmark No. 65, Glass said. SCARY SIGHTINGS As for all those unusual sightings, well, Glass said: “The house’s haunted reputation dates back to the 19th century, mainly stemming from the fact that it stands on San Diego’s former execution grounds, and its fame is worldwide thanks to countless books and TV shows that report on it. Reports of hauntings continue to this day, and visitors continue to tour the museum in hopes of spotting something supernatural. Our hope is that visitors also learn about the history of San Diego in the 1800s, the Whaley family, and the house itself.” When asked if he has personally witnessed any ghosts himself, Glass says he has, and more than once. “I saw a full apparition of a man I believe was Thomas Whaley (though in his 20s), standing on the upstairs landing as I walked up the stairs one morning. He looked at me as if he was curious as to who I was and why I was in his house, then disappeared. He was all shades of gray, no color to him; I’ve seen a few other fleeting figures that are all gray also, but none as distinct as Mr. Whaley,” he recalled. “On one occasion, I witnessed the chandelier in the courtroom swinging back and forth for no apparent reason. I have also on many occasions heard footsteps walking across the upstairs floor when no one is there; these sounds are always preceded by a loud crashing sound, like a sonic boom. I once heard a man clear his throat loudly as if to let me know I wasn’t alone when I was alone in the museum.” And with Halloween just around the corner, many like to visit the Whaley House Museum in hopes of possibly seeing a ghost or two, he said. “While October/Halloween is a fun time of year to tour the Whaley House, and we dress the museum in traditional Victorian mourning complete with casket in the parlor and our focus is more on the ghostly legends of the house, the hauntings seem to happen throughout the year, both morning and night. Sometimes these occur when one is alone and other times whole groups have witnessed strange goings-on,” he said. If you’re wondering why someone would want to visit the famous home/now museum, there are a few reasons, he said. “It has been said that the Whaley House contains more history within its walls than any other building in the city, and I believe that is likely true. So, anyone interested in history or heritage tourism will find the museum a fascinating look at 19th-century San Diego,” he said. “The museum is furnished with period furnishings and artifacts, many of which belonged to the Whaley family. Also, people who are interested in the paranormal or fans of any of the many television shows that have filmed here will want to see it in person. While no one can guarantee a ghost will materialize at any time, there is always the chance of an encounter. The Whaley House offers both history and mystery to its visitors.” FACT OR FICTION While the story of the Whaley House is a fascinating one, some of the most famous legends surrounding it simply are not true, Glass added. One of these involves the little Washburn girl who was supposedly killed in the backyard when she ran into a low-hanging clothesline — never happened. Nor was anyone hanged from the pepper trees in the side yard; these trees were planted by the Whaleys long after anyone was hanged on the property, and the hangings occurred on gallows that stood beneath the footprint of the house, Glass said. “Also, daughter Violet Whaley’s husband George, while far from a perfect gentleman, was not quite the cad he is made out to be and did not abandon Violet on their honeymoon as has been reported,” he said. For Halloween, Glass said there will be extended nighttime hours the last week of October and will stay open until midnight on Oct. 25, 26 and 31. “The house will be dressed in Victorian mourning as if someone has died. We also light the house using historic oil lamps to give it an authentic, and extra creepy, atmosphere,” he said. POPULAR MUSEUM A private home for decades, the Whaley House opened as a historic house museum in May of 1960 and has been operated by SOHO since 2000. Since then, SOHO has been in the process of restoring the house to its appearance of the focus period of 1868-72, when the general store, courtroom, and theater were present. The restoration is on-going, and SOHO is currently working on restoring the guest-chamber with period design carpet and wallpaper, according to Glass. Thomas Whaley and his immediate family might be gone, but there is some family still living. “Yes, and we are in touch with a few of them,” Glass said. “They do not seem to like the attention of being associated with the Whaley House, so we like to let them have their privacy. “The Whaleys’ great-great-grandson donated a collection of furniture, artifacts, journals, letters, and photographs of the Whaley family to us several years ago. Many of the furnishings have been returned to the museum; photos, letters, and journals were very helpful in compiling our book ‘The History & Mystery of the Whaley House,’” Glass said. WHALEY HOUSE MUSEUM Where: 2476 San Diego Ave. Tours: Arrive at least 30 minutes before closing to allow enough time to tour the house. All tours are self-guided, but docents are always available to answer questions and provide additional information. No advance reservations are necessary for groups of less than 12. TRAGEDY STRIKES HIGH TECH HIGH TEACHER This summer, Dustin and Sofia Tannenhaus, an instructor at High Tech High in Liberty Station, were traveling abroad in Europe. The couple were celebrating precious milestones in their life: Dustin had earned a month-long sabbatical, and Sofia had just finished a successful year as a teacher at HTH. Four weeks into their vacation, on Saturday, July 20, everything changed. Dustin dropped Sofia off at a local gym and went for a run near the water, just like any other day. When he finished his intense workout, he became ill. As it turned out, he was suffering from heat exhaustion from a heatwave that culminated in heatstroke.  With the help of locals Sofia met at the gym that morning, they rushed Dustin to the hospital. But by the time he reached the hospital, he had fallen into a coma, which ended in cardiac arrest, five days before his 34th birthday. After returning from their tragic trip, Sofia discovered she was with child. While Sofia is excited, she never anticipated being a single mom, and raising a child on her teacher's income will be extremely challenging. A GoFundMe drive has been set up for Sofia Tannenaus, gofundme.com/f/DustinTannenhaus,  organized by Tin Lib. LYFT LAUNCHES NEW SCOOTERS IN SAN DIEGO Lyft has launched its first scooter model built from the ground up specifically for scooter-share in the San Diego area, which is one of the first markets for these new scooters, distinguished by their iconic pink wheels. Just like all of Lyft’s other scooter markets, the company offers its Community Pass for low-income San Diegans to ensure transportation options are equitable and accessible. Eligible residents can sign up to pay only $5 per month for unlimited, free 30-minute rides within the service area. Lyft designed this model with a wider base, thicker, air-filled wheels for a smoother trip, a more durable build, a more powerful battery that can charge faster and last longer, and a hand brake, similar to a bike brake. “The new Lyft scooters take the rider experience to the next level,” said Kyle Zuvella, market manager for Lyft Bikes and Scooters in San Diego. “For the first time, Lyft scooters will also feature our iconic pink wheels, making it undeniably clear that scooters are central to Lyft’s vision for a future where cities are built around people, not private cars.”  JONAS BROTHERS TO PLAY PECHANGA ARENA Grammy-nominated multiplatinum powerhouse trio the Jonas Brothers recently announced the details for the 40-city “Happiness Begins Tour.” Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas will hit the road, stopping at Pechanga Arena in San Diego on Thursday, Oct. 17. They’ll bring along with them special guests Bebe Rexha and Jordan McGraw. SAN DIEGO NO. 5 CITY FOR FOOD LOVERS San Diego has been ranked fifth in Yelp’s list of the “Top U.S. Destination for Food Lovers.” According to Yelp, the ranking was determined by comparing cities’ new restaurants, ratings, and reviews as well as cuisine diversity and the percentage of food photos.  Some of the dishes to note – according to Yelp – included Pork Belly Benedict at Werewolf in downtown San Diego, the Kimchi Dumpling Hot Soup at TastyPot in Kearny Mesa, and the Hot Chicken at Common Stock in Hillcrest. San Francisco took the No. 1 spot, followed by St. Louis and Honolulu.

    God is Great

I have been leaving with Genital Herpes for 6 years with lot of outbreaks and stigma with the knowledge of no cure for the virus affected me morally and mentally because of the discrimination by people. I started using Famvir (famciclovir) drugs for a very long time but which is not totally preventing the outbreaks and didn't cure me either. l came across lot of testimony on a blogger page including the doctor email address when surfing the internet about how they were cured from different diseases within 21 days with Dr. Ahmed Usman local traditional Herbal medicine example of the doctor patient were 'Luciene Ethan from Ecuador and Denver Luke from Florida' which I find interesting so I decided to give the doctor a try. I contacted Dr. Ahmed on his official email address and after telling me his means of preparation I ordered for one which he truly sent to me through UPS delivery service and with his prescription I used the herbal medicine for 21 days and I discovered the different between the herbal medicine and famciclovir drugs, the outbreaks on my private part was cured and the symptoms I used to have were no more, after using the herbal medicine as prescribed by doctor Ahmed I decided to go for another IgG text and my result came out negative with no trace of the virus on my blood. I will really love to recommend him to anyone with the virus and you reading this testimony with the virus to please contact him for cure, he is really trustworthy and his herbal medicine works for herpes, because he cured me, I will really love if this doctor Herbs will be published for anyone without internet assess to purchase and be cured. My name is Adam Jules and I am from United Kingdom I love herbs so much. please contact doctor Ahmed Usman through his Email address on: drahmedusman5104@gmail.com. Please share the good news to other people once you are cured.

Growing up in the suburbs of a Northeastern city in the 1980s meant tacos came out of a box shelved in the “international” aisle at a grocery store. One day a week – usually Wednesdays – we were exposed to “tacos” with greasy ground beef, shredded iceberg lettuce and mounds of mozzarella stuffed into delicate hard shells. It was a fun mess and about as close to Mexican food as we got. But, like tacos, we evolved.  Just last weekend we were ordering al pastor tacos in the busiest, noisiest, and probably, best taco spot in Tijuana. Tacos El Franc is a must-visit for any fan of the authentic street taco – the ambiance, the smells, and the flavors can’t be beat.  But up here in the beach communities of San Diego, National Taco Day (officially Oct. 4, but we decided to extend those 24 hours and make it a full taco month) is celebrated a little differently as local restaurants think outside the box. In Ocean Beach and Point Loma, taco-lovers can try tofu tacos, breakfast tacos, and even la Diablo tacos. Of course, for those who like the traditional route, plenty of high-quality carne asada, al pastor, and fish taco choices abound. Check out our suggestions below and find your favorite taco spot. Mike’s Taco Club 5060 Newport Ave. Mike’s Taco Club serves a wide variety of tacos including a scallop tacos, octopus tacos, and tacos especiales, which include fish, shrimp, and scallops. Tacos come with cheese, cabbage, onion, tomato, cilantro, and avocado Ortega’s Cocina 4888 Newport Ave. Ortega’s Cocina is a cute restaurant with a family feel located in the heart of Ocean Beach. They offer a wide variety of tacos, and they are most well-known for their grilled fish tacos, carne asada tacos, and chicken tacos. Aside from tacos, Ortega’s has an extensive menu of Mexican food favorites. Nico’s Mexican Food 4918 Newport Ave. Nico’s Mexican Food is a hole-in-the-wall taco shop with a small dining area. For great prices, choose from a variety of crispy tacos including carne asada tacos, fish tacos, carnitas tacos, beef tacos, and chicken tacos. Bravo’s Mexican Bistro and Cantina 5001 Newport Ave. Bravo’s celebrates Taco Tuesday twice a week. On Tuesday, come to Bravo’s for $2.50 select tacos, beers, and tequila. Taco Tuesday is also observed on Thursdays. Come to Bravo’s for the tacos, and stay for their large selection of margaritas. Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill 5083 Santa Monica Ave. Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill serves fresh and local seafood. Order their seafood in the best way – as part of a taco. Blue Water’s fish tacos served on fresh corn tortillas with cabbage, tomatoes, onions, cheddar cheese, homemade white sauce and your choice of fish marinated in a spicy chipotle sauce Hugo’s Cocina 1830 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Hugo’s does Mexican food with a vegan/vegetarian-centric spin. Meat-eating guests may choose from beef, chicken, or seafood tacos. Many options, such as veggie, tempeh, and tofu tacos, are available for non-meat eating guests. Sunnie's 4723 Point Loma Ave. Sunnie's serves up authentic Mexican cuisine and OB Beans coffee along with breakfast all day. Try their three homemade salsas with a breakfast taco deluxe stuffed with eggs, cheese with bacon. Of check out their specials throughout the week that include TJ-style tacos, tofu tacos, and carne asada, plus grilled fish and shrimp tacos. Cotija's Cocina Mexicana 3720 Voltaire St. The first Cotija’s opened in 1974 in Point Loma. Named after the town of Cotija, Michoacán in Mexico, where the owner David Ruiz was from, the restaurant eventually became a success after years of hard work and perseverance. Cotija's is known for authentic Mexican flavors and their pork carnitas, pollo asada, and beef tacos. Alamilla’s Mexican Food 3742 Midway Drive This small taco stand on Midway Drive stands out for its Mexican flavors and bright yellow building. Taco Tuesdays specials means carnitas, adobada, and chicken tacos for $1.50. The eatery offers no-frills but does serve high-quality carne asada, shrimp, and fish tacos. For something different, try the rolled taquitos with guacamole. Mitch’s Seafood 1403 Scott St. Mitch’s Seafood serves some of the best fish tacos in San Diego. Its fish is fresh from the waters off San Diego and Northern Baja. Mitch’s taco menu offers a range of seafood tacos including grilled fish, beer-battered Alaskan cod, and fried calamari. El Jardín Cantina 2885 Perry Road The new cantina in Liberty Station has a menu that features classics such as camarones a la Diabla and a tacos a la carte selection that includes birria tacos with short rib beef, Oaxaca cheese, and olla beans; pastor octopus and shrimp tacos with grill pineapple, habanero crema on a blue corn tortilla, or portobella mushroom tacos with avocado purée, grilled jalapeños, Molcajete salsa and cilantro. Ortiz’s Taco Shop 3704 Voltaire St. Ortiz’s Taco Shop is a small taco shop located near Point Loma High School. The shop serves everything from soft-shell street tacos to crispy tacos to rolled tacos all made with meats such as carne asada, carnitas, and chicken. For more adventurous eaters, Ortiz’s also offers authentic Mexican flavors like tacos al pastor, cabeza, and buche. Miguel’s Cocina 2912 Shelter Island Drive Miguel’s Cocina has a family feel that offers authentic Mexican flavors. The restaurant has a large menu and a great taco selection. Order a taco plate and choose from tacos like chicken mole, adobada, longaniza, pork belly tacos, or seafood tacos like the crispy ahi tuna, grilled swordfish tacos, and the Ensenada-style shrimp tacos. Don’t forget to order an extra side of Miguel’s white queso. Point Loma Fish Shop 1110 Rosecrans St. The open-air eatery provides the freshest fish and highest quality ingredients. Among their specialties is the award-winning TKO Taco. The mahi-mahi is marinated in Fish Shop seasoning and topped with homemade mango salsa – it’s a must-try. The spicy dorado taco with Sriracha aioli slaw and avocado lime drizzle is a tasty second choice. Tony’s Fresh Mexican Food 1578 Rosecrans St. At Tony’s Fresh Mexican Food, fresh is better. And it’s better 24 hours a day seven days a week. Tony’s even offers drive-thru service. This small taco shop offers a variety of tacos and Taco Tuesday specials. Choose from seafood tacos and specials like A la Diablo Tacos or Achiote chicken tacos. The Brigantine 2725 Shelter Island Drive In honor of National Taco Day, choose from a selection of The Brigantine’s tacos including the Brig’s famous fish tacos, the grilled Sonoran spiced swordfish tacos, or the surf and turf taco plate. Urban Corps members got paid while earning their high school GED equivalency and the environment got cleansed. That was the trade-off recently when Urban Corps of San Diego County workers recently spent several days restoring Famosa Slough at 4275-4283 W. Point Loma Blvd.  “We received a $15,000 grant through SDG&E’s Environmental Champions Initiative to restore the slough along with some Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students from Correia Middle School,” said Lauren Welch, Urban Corps development manager, and grant author. “They put in some new trails, barbed wire, removed invasive plants, cleared brush and provided water-quality improvements: restoration activities.” A slough is a wetland, usually a swamp or shallow lake, often a backwater to a larger body of water. Famosa Slough is a 37-acre wetland between Ocean Beach and the Sports Arena arena bisected by West Point Loma Boulevard and bordered by Famosa Boulevard on the west.  Famosa Slough is flushed with salt water from the river channel and also collects rainwater from the surrounding neighborhood. Its 12-acre channel portion and the 25-acre southern portion are owned and maintained by the City. Both portions are accessible by the public, and benches are located at view areas. Urban Corps serves as a bridge to a better life for young adults ages 18-26. The program provides paid job training, support services, and a second chance to earn a high school diploma for participants, while simultaneously offering a variety of professional services to the community, which also helps train and employ corps members. Corps’ youth gain job skills on environmental, construction, and community projects, whether planting a tree, removing graffiti, working in the San Diego River, improving a park or rehabilitating low-income homes.  “Urban Corps is giving me a chance to help the community and the environment through this project at the Famosa Slough, restoring the wetland and the surrounding area,” said corps member Hernan Partida. “Like today, we installed new posts for the trail around the slough. I am grateful to have this opportunity to learn hard work and give back through the Urban Corps.” “It has always been a part of our mission to care for the environment and the community around us,” said Kyle Kennedy, Urban Corps’ CEO. “The Famosa Slough is an important wetland in our community and right down the street from our operations (3127 Jefferson St.). We are thrilled to partner with SDG&E, Correia Middle School and Friends of the Famosa Slough to restore the slough through this community project.” Welch said about 30, eight-member crews from Urban Corps work eight-hour days on community projects from Oceanside to the U.S.-Mexico border. There are presently about 220 San Diego Urban Corps members, who can be easily identified by their uniforms. “They have button-down olive dark green safety vests and wear hard hats,” Welch noted. Urban Corps roots go back to Gov. Jerry Brown’s creation of the California Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1976 as a legacy to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps founded in 1933.  Over time, Urban Corps has given thousands of underserved, low-income young adults the opportunity to finish high school while earning a paycheck, while improving themselves and advancing their own communities.  After completing the program, youth are more employable, have the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the workforce, and know the importance of resource preservation and giving back to the community.

    October 11, 2019
I want to let the world know about Doctor Padman the Great spell caster that brought back my husband to me when i thought all hope was lost, I got my love back and saved my marriage… I was married for 3years with 1kid and we lived happily until things started getting ugly and we had fights and argued almost every time… it got worse at a point that he filed for divorce… I tried my best to make him change his mind & stay with me because I love him so much and don’t want to lose him but everything just didn’t work out… he moved out of the house because it was a rented apartment and still went ahead to file for divorce… I pleaded and tried everything but still nothing worked. The breakthrough came when someone introduced me to this wonderful, great spell caster who eventually helped me out… I have never been a fan of things like this but just decided to try reluctantly because I was desperate and left with no choice… He did special prayers and used his power… Within 4 days my husband called me and he said he was sorry for all the emotional pains he had cost me, moved back to the house and we continue to live happily and our son is happy too and we are expecting our second child… (padmanlovespell@yahoo.com) I have introduced him to a lot of couples with problems across the world and they have had good news… Just thought I should share my experience because I strongly believe someone out there need’s it… You can email him through his email.padmanlovespell@yahoo.com
