Women Voters to host forum on FDA, drugs

The League of Women Voters will host a discussion titled “The FDA:  How Safe Are Your Drugs and Medical Devices?” during the group’s October meeting.

The forum will include a short video on how the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves new drugs and a presentation on the workings of the FDA.

Among the topics:

• What is a generic drug and a “me too” drug?

• What is off-label use of drugs?

• Does the FDA monitor manufacturers worldwide?

• Why do we have drug shortages?

• Should taxpayers fund 100 percent of the drug-approval process?

• Should the FDA permit more prescription drugs be converted to over-the-counter drugs as is done in other countries?

The discussion will be held at the Point Loma/Hervey Branch Library, 3701 Voltaire St. from 1 to 3 p.m.
