“Be Here Now: The Story of Ram Dass,” a biographical play about the Harvard University psychologist who became a spiritual figure of the American 1960s, will be presented by the La Jolla-based Vantage Theatre at Ocean Beach Playhouse Friday through Sunday, Aug. 15 through 17.

Ram Dass, whose given name was Richard Alpert, was terminated from his Harvard professorship in 1963, along with his colleague Timothy Leary, for his experimentation in psychedelic drugs. Alpert then traveled to India, studying with guru Neem Karoli Baba, and was given the name Ram Dass, which means “servant of God.” He wrote “Be Here Now,” a seminal 1971 book on yoga, spirituality and meditation. In 2013, he published a summary of his experiences in the book “Polishing the Mirror: How to Live from Your Spiritual Heart.”

Boston native Ram Dass, 83, lives in Hawaii. Leary died in 1996.

Ocean Beach Playhouse is located at 4944 Newport Ave. in Ocean Beach. Show times are Aug. 15 at 8 p.m., Aug. 16 at 2 and 8 p.m. and Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $40. For more, call (858) 859-2281 or visit vantagetheatre.com.
