“Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn was asked in a March 7 Facebook chat if he would be in San Diego for the annual convention of pop culture in a few months.
“I'm not sure,” he responded. “Marvel isn't going, so I'm not sure I will either.”Man" Bloggers jumped on the statement that hints that Marvel Studios – not Marvel as a whole – will skip the event, scheduled for July 9 to 12.
This year, Marvel was expected to return with its annual entourage of big celebrity names to promote the upcoming movies “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Ant Man.”
Marvel's longest-running superhero team, the Fantastic Four, will be featured in the upcoming movie from 20th Century Fox.
Comic-Con 2015 spokesperson David Glanzer said his staff normally doesn't begin planning the exhibit floor layout or the panel schedule until the beginning of May.
Even so, Glanzer said not everyone appears every year.
'It’s not unusual for a studio to miss a day or a studio to combine their presentation with another studio slot," Glanzer said. "As of right now, we haven’t heard anything.”
Comic-Con is San Diego's single most profitable yearly weekend special event, pumping some $180 million into the local economy.
