Stephen Sagiao was one of three people in a canoe in Mission Bay on Friday, March 13. The canoe, which was about 25 yards from the Ski beach boat ramp in Mission Bay Park, flipped over for an unknown reason, and the 54-year-old Sagiao was not wearing a life jacket, according to San Diego Police.

Two of the people swam to safety, but Sagiao was unable to swim to safety, was pulled from the water with no pulse and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital. Northern Division is investigating.

His family has set up a account to help raise money for funeral costs. Sagiao is survived by four children and five grandchildren.
