A nearly four-hour SWAT standoff at an apartment on the UCSD campus ended early March 18, with a man and a woman surrendering, police said.

The standoff, at 3935 Miramar St., began around 1:40 a.m. when campus police were called to investigate a possible domestic violence situation and gunfire in the apartment, according to San Diego police Officer Dan Lasher.

As the couple barricaded themselves inside, nearby residents – many of whom were studying for finals – were ordered out of their apartments for their own safety, Lasher said.

Sometime before 5 a.m., officers used a flash-bang grenade to force the occupants outside. The man came out of the apartment, surrendered and was handcuffed before being led to the backseat of a police cruiser. Lasher said the woman gave herself up just before 5:30 a.m. Evacuation orders for nearby residents were lifted after officers secured the scene.

It was not immediately confirmed whether any actual gunfire took place, Lasher said. No one was injured.

Three people in custody are being questioned. No injuries were reported. This incident remains under investigation.
