Last month was likely the hottest March on record as measured at San Diego’s Lindbergh Field since record keeping started in 1872, the National Weather Service said.

There were seven days in March where the mercury topped 80 degrees. The weather service said 1947 and 1988 were the previous March record holders, with five days above 80.

Four days last month – March 13, 14, 15 and 27 – set record daily high temperatures for those dates.

The daily high temperature dropped below average just twice and the daily low temperature was only under average three times in March.

The average temperature for March was 66.6 degrees, 1.1 degrees higher than the average March high temperature for San Diego over the last 143 years.
