The suspect was linked to an online gaming group that is responsible for making bomb threats or calling in “swatting” incidents in five other states nationwide (Georgia, Michigan, Massachusetts, Texas and Illinois) as well as in two cities in the province of Ontario, Canada. The juvenile was placed into Juvenile Hall for his involvement in these incidents.
Additional suspects from the group have been arrested in other states. The San Diego Police Department is working closely with other law enforcement agencies in the impacted cities. The investigation is continuing and additional arrests may be forthcoming.
The San Diego Police Department takes these types of threats very seriously. Oftentimes, they result in the costly deployment of emergency response resources, including specialized personnel and equipment. This level of response is determined to be appropriate based on the information received in order to ensure public safety.
However, when it is later determined that the information received was not only false but was delivered with the intent to cause a considerable emergency response, then the Department is committed to conducting thorough investigations directed towards the arrest and prosecution of all persons involved and responsible for making these threats.
