The 35th annual Police and Emergency Services Appreciation Night takes place 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the North Crown Point Shores Rotary Club Pavilion.

There will be a barbeque dinner provided by OMBAC, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, American Legion PB and the PB Town Council.

In 1980, the Pacific Beach Town Council, along with Old Mission Beach Athletic Club, began honoring local emergency service personnel police, lifeguards, firefighters and park rangers) at a picnic dinner. This tradition has continued each year with a celebratory picnic to show the community's gratitude. Dignitaries and senior-level leaders present proclamations and awards, for outstanding individuals from each department.

Since 2012, the town council has chosen one group each year to receive monetary help for some of their necessary equipment. In 2012, the local police were recipients of money to upgrade their patrol bicycles. In 2013, Fire Station 21 used their money to help modernize their kitchen. Last year, the lifeguard station was given money to purchase and install cupboards, a washer and dryer and hoists for wheelchairs for the disabled.

This year, the council honored the Mission Bay Park Rangers who patrol more than 4,000 acres of park. They are in need of a Polaris vehicle to patrol areas of the San Diego River and parkland and office equipment.
