Members of the 2018 Point Loma baseball team gathered recently to celebrate their season and honor top players. Nearly 200 people filled the outdoor pavilion of the Bali Hai restaurant on Shelter Island for a banquet, raffle and awards.

Former coach David Wells and assistants Kyle Harvey, Mike Delgado and John Gerber made it a memorable night for the team's 12 seniors, recalling highlights of each player's career and noting future plans.

In addition, each graduate was presented with a custom Pointer jersey with his last name stitched across the back.

Parents had also met to create large scrapbook displays of each player with photos going back to their sons' early cap league days.

The 10 underclassmen were also feted for their contributions to the team.

Awards included:

- Defensive Player of the Year: Senior Joe DaLuz.

- Offensive Player of the Year: Junior Ben Berry.

- Pitcher of the Year: Senior Austin Correia.

- Most Valuable Player: Berry.

- Coach Delgado Leadership Award: Seniors Dylan Vaughn and Joe DaLuz.

- Ken and Margaret Harvey Scholarships ($500 each): Vaughn and Correia.

The Pointer JV team finished as league champions with an overall record of 23-4. The team recorded an incredible .338 batting average and pitchers combined for an excellent 1.17 earned run average. Head coach Jeff Solis and assistant Tom Vaughn introduced each of their 20 players.

Also, the Pointer freshman team was recognized for its very successful season under head coach JoJo Storniolo II. Seventeen players were also coached by a trio of assistant coaches who were all former Pointer varsity players including Kap Davis, Joe DaLuz and Chance Jimenez.

Extra points

It was announced that Wells' No. 11 Pointer jersey from his prep days is being retired by the school.

Senior pitcher Mitchell Sardo is the only Pointer selected to play in the first Padres High School All-Star game.  The game, featuring the top 48 players in the San Diego CIF section, will be played on June 6 at Petco Park following the 12:40 p.m. Padres game against the Atlanta Braves. Admission to the game is free with a Padres ticket. The game is also sponsored by Fox Sports.
