Today, Steve and I decided to have lunch there. He had never done a review with me, and I was interested to see his take on the restaurant.
One enters from a ramp on the corner of Bacon Street and Newport Avenue. If you didn’t know where it was, you could easily pass it by. The restaurant has a counter looking out onto Bacon Street, and tables along the wall. Behind the ordering counter, the cook was busy preparing the orders that had been taken before we arrived.
The menu is large and above the counter. There are appetizers, salads, sandwiches, entrees, family meals, and favorites. And tucked away in a little corner at the end of the menu board is this: “Tuesday/Thursday special” – 3 tacos, with your choice of grilled chicken, shawarma, or gyros on pita bread, “for an unbelievable price of $6!
When I went into the restaurant I already knew what I wanted – the “vegetarian mesa platter” for $15 – but after seeing the tacos, I quickly changed my order.
Steve decided to have the Greek salad, which was advertised as fresh spring mix lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, topped with Greek feta cheese, klamata olives and topped with their house dressing. That was $8, and if he wanted chicken or gyros it was $3.50 extra. It was a very large salad; the dressing was on the side; and everything was fresh and crispy.
When we were asked if we wanted anything to drink I asked if they had ice tea. I was told they did not, but almost immediately the cook told me that she could make me a glass. I was impressed with her wanting to make me happy, but she was so busy that I declined her offer.
The “tacos” were delicious. I think that I actually prefer tacos on pita bread now, rather than on tortillas. The bread was soft, fresh, and absolutely stuffed with the chicken that I ordered. Three of them were too many for me, and I brought one home to snack on later in the day. The yogurt sauce on the top was also delicious and just right for the meal.
I was very impressed with the both of our meals. Steve said that he would definitely order the salad again, and it should be mentioned that the only thing he left on his plate were the pits from the klamata olives.
I will be returning again soon. And if it isn’t on a Tuesday or Thursday, I just might order the mesa platter after all. I should point out that they have daily lunch specials every day, such as lunch plates for $8.50 with your choice of beef shawarma, chicken shawarma or gyros meat with a side of rice and salad. Don’t want that? How about a two for $12 sandwich deal on any sandwich and the sandwich combo can be had with fries and a drink for $12.
There are many selections to choose from. Maybe I will start at the top of the menu and just cross one off each time I am there. In the meantime, I am going to go and finish my third taco and enjoy it after completing this review.
