DZI Construction Inc. has completed a $6.5 million, 35,000-square-foot laboratory and office tenant improvement for Inhibrx, a clinical stage biologic therapeutic company located in Torrey Pines Science Park.

Designed by Ferguson, Pape, Baldwin Architects (FPBA), the Class A creative office and lab improvements incorporate elements of nature throughout, including dramatic moss living walls and wood accents. Scientists are afforded sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and Torrey Pines, as laboratories were given priority on view opportunities. Ubiquitous interior glazing extends those views throughout the building, and a series of folding glass walls bring the outside in.

In just 22 weeks, DZI transformed the space, with major upgrades to the mechanical and electrical systems, lab air gas and vacuum systems, and new finishes top to bottom. The team that accomplished the fast pace improvements included: Greg Dziewit, Project Manager; Steve Rachal, Superintendent; Pac Rim Mechanical, Cooper Electric, Cutting Edge Drywall and Taber Custom Millwork.

"DZI did an amazing job of capturing our vision of creating a unique research and development environment that fosters innovation and communication. We thoroughly enjoyed our interactions with Greg and his team and were impressed by their ability to rapidly execute on a complicated build-out,” said Brendan Eckleman, Ph.D, Founder and COO, of Inhibrx.

DZI excels in negotiated projects and worked with Rebecca Gallegos, at Project Management Advisors, Mike Dorris at HCP, and Amanda Schultz at FBPA, providing value engineering and consulting during planning, as well as subcontractor management during construction.

“Constructing this unique space in record time and under budget required us to build a great team first,” said Greg Dziewit, President of DZI Construction. “Everyone worked really hard towards the shared goal, from the laborer to the landlord, subcontractor to the construction manager, architect to the tradesman.”

Founded in 2011, by Greg Dziewit and Debra Bermudes-Dziewit, DZI Construction, Inc. is a Southern California builder with laboratory design-build, retail, commercial and industrial construction experience. Greg began his career in residential remodeling and turned to laboratory construction with David Begent and Co, and founded DZI to continue building labs after David’s retirement.
