Surfing before school and at lunch is more enjoyable when the ocean isn’t brimming with trash, and hot coals aren’t smoldering in the sand, said PBMS student Graham Allen. It’s easy to complain, but doing something about actually helps the community.

“My four friends – Willa Weber, Mazie Weber, Parker Kaltsas, Mila Marzion – and I organized a beach cleanup on Sept. 8 to create a paradise in Pacific Beach. We collected trash on the beach ranging from a shoe on a leash to a broken boogie board to beer cans. Our main goal was to dig up the hot coals sitting under the sand that stayed hot overnight and we picked buckets full.”

The clean-up was such a success that the group of students has decided to continue to organize beach cleanups and do them once every month.

That's great! THANK YOU, STUDENTS! Proper gear for picking up garbage should include complete upper-body and lower-body coverage as well as tiny particle-filtration full-facemasks, due to very small, toxic, airborne particles found in most garbage.

Even though water bacteria levels at the shore and surfline are sampled by city/county authorities, it would be really great if students could organize several teams of students to also do this type of testing every day, all year long. A great educational project would be if the students organized test results and published these results on the internet as soon as they acquire them each day of the year.
