Midway Planning Group postpones elections

Responding to a 52-page package from the City discussing conditions for annual planning group elections during COVID, Midway-Pacific Highway Planning group chair Cathy Kenton addressed upcoming elections at the group’s February meeting.

“We have a number of options available to us, and we’re being told this is what planning groups have to do to handle elections,” said Kenton. “Traditionally, they are held next month. During this unusual time, given that we now have vacancies on the board, I feel it’s more important for us to try to fill those vacancies and to re-elect or continue those terms of those folks already on the board.”

“It would not be a bad move to have our elections in six months while filling the vacant seats,” agreed board member Kurt Sullivan.

“I suggest we extend the current seats on our board to September or October when, hopefully, we can meet in-person and hold in-person elections,” said Kenton.

Board member Judy Holiday pointed out the planning group should begin setting the group election process in motion in July, given the group is generally dark in August.

 

VACCINATION SITE APPROVED

In February, Midway-Pacific Highway Community Plan Group opted to support City/County use of the former Sports Arena parking lot as a senior vaccination site.

“If the Sports Arena can seat 15,000 people, it should be available for any vaccination operation,” said board member Kurt Sullivan. “I think it’s a win-win situation.”

“I’m hoping that we can keep this conversation moving forward,” said Kenton. “It’s a good location, and it’s very central to the residents of District 2, Linda Vista and Old Town. There are plenty of folks that would welcome this.”

 

COMPLETE COMMUNITIES DECISION DELAYED

Midway-Pacific Highway Community Planning Group opted to postpone a final decision on whether to support the City’s proposed Complete Communities plan.

Complete Communities is a package of initiatives and planning strategies to provide incentives for housing development near transit while promoting and investing in active transportation as an alternative to cars. The plan prioritizes the City’s resources channeling them to prioritize underrepresented lower-income neighborhoods referred to in the plan as “Communities of Concern.”

“I’m anxious to support a good process for creating and maintaining public parks,” said plan group chair Kenton. “I don’t feel, at this point, that I have enough of an understanding of these Complete Communities recommendations. I therefore can’t support this proposal without understanding how it will impact us (Midway District).”

“At this point it’s just premature for us to take a hard position on this issue when we do not know the implications,” concurred board member Kurt Sullivan.
