An Ocean Beach man pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder of his mother and admitted to the special circumstance of torture as the victim was stabbed 45 times.

A prison sentence of life without the possibility of parole awaits Daniel Chase McKibben, 38, when he is sentenced for killing Heidi McKibben Green, 59, on May 1, 2019.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Eugenia Eyherabide set sentencing for Sept. 13. McKibben remains in jail without bail.

McKibben also admitted to another special circumstance of killing his mother during a robbery as some of her possessions were missing. He also admitted to personal use of a knife in a homicide.

Deputy District Attorney Kristie Nikoletich said previously the torture charge was based on the victim being stabbed 45 times in the face, neck, and head. She said one stab wound punctured the brain.

“The defendant is very angry with his mother,” said Nikoletich earlier, adding the stabbings were done “for the purpose of revenge.”

“He had everything handed to him,” said Nikoletich, adding that his mother helped him in paying for his truck and allowed him to live in an Ocean Beach condominium she owned.

“This is a very sad and tragic case,” said his attorney, Damian Lowe, in March during the preliminary hearing.

McKibben put his mother’s body into a city trash container in the garage. His brother, Adam McKibben, testified he found the body.

Before he found the body, Adam McKibben said he saw his brother run away when he showed up at the home in the 5000 block of Niagara Avenue. Adam McKibben testified his brother had bipolar disorder with manic episodes.

A detective testified the victim’s ring, valued at $40,000, was missing along with other jewelry. The victim’s Apple watch was recovered from an Ocean Beach Starbucks that McKibben had visited.

Daniel McKibben went to stay with a friend in La Mesa after $12,000 was withdrawn from her mother’s bank account and placed in his account, according to witnesses.

His friend’s father called police when McKibben would not leave. Witnesses said McKibben asked police to shoot him and then pulled a knife. He was shot twice in the shoulder and hand.

McKibben was later arraigned in his hospital bed.
