A local dog has thousands of Instagram followers and millions of video viewers.

“I am the owner of a golden retriever named Bruce ‘San Diego Bruce’ and his Instagram account is on its way to 10,000 followers,” said Laura Siciliano of Pacific Beach. “We are at almost 9,900 followers. We also have four videos that have gone viral with more than 1 million views each.”

Laura said Bruce has gained popularity over Instagram through viral photos and videos posted on his account, @san_diego_bruce. “Some videos show him wearing a Padres baseball cap or sunglasses,” Siciliano said. “He loves putting smiles on people’s faces.”

The 11-month-old golden retriever will celebrate his first birthday on Aug. 14. Siciliano said their family adopted Bruce nine months ago and immediately created an Instagram account for their pooch as “a diary and a chronicle of his baby photos. It was just a way to keep track of him, as well as creating video content.”

Siciliano admitted putting Bruce on the social media app has blown away all their expectations for just how successful photo-sharing of him could be.

“It’s just fun to share content of a good dog; It’s a fun corner of the internet,” noted Siciliano. “He has a lot of loyal fans, and people can share his videos with their friends. It’s just a fun little hobby.”

Siciliano noted Instagram posts, as in Bruce’s case, can lead to a “chain reaction, with a lot of people seeing and sharing posts that can explode all at once. When thousands of people are viewing a video at once, it’s like a domino effect.”

Added Siciliano about Instagram sharing, “It’s very wholesome and a lot of fun, for sure.”

Launched in October 2010, Instagram rapidly gained popularity, with one million registered users in two months, 10 million in a year, and 1 billion as of June 2018. In April 2012, Facebook acquired it for approximately $1 billion in U.S. cash and stock. As of October 2015, more than 40 billion photos had been uploaded.

As of June 2021, the most followed person was Portuguese professional footballer Cristiano Ronaldo with more than 300 million followers. The most followed woman was American singer Ariana Grande. As of Jan. 14, 2019, the most-liked photo on Instagram is a picture of an egg, posted by the account @world_record_egg, created with the sole purpose of surpassing the previous record of 18 million likes on a Kylie Jenner post.
