La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival took place on July 23-24 at The Lot in La Jolla. This Cannes of the fashion film world was the 12th annual. Friday began with a meet and greet with the filmmakers, directors, designers, and stylists from around the world. They were surrounded by breathtaking artwork that had been blown up on banners by Antonio Contreras and Jacques Silberstein.
Saturday started with film showings in three of the theaters at The Lot. The red carpet started at 3 p.m. in the parking lot. There was a line-up of paparazzi snapping the pictures of guests as they arrived. There were interviews that were broadcast live by three different distributions.
The Saturday event began at 8 p.m. with the mistress of ceremonies, Emmy Award winner Tabitha Lipkin, welcoming the crowd. She was wearing a beautiful gown by One By Maya. She started by announcing some of the International Fashion Film Awards (the IFFAS).
The Best Accessory went to Pop-Electro Girl, LALauraParis for “I Am Leaving Right Away.” This singer-songwriter, composer, and performer arrived from Paris for this event.
Stephanie Singson won Best Makeup for the uplifting film “I Dream in Color.” D’Offay took home Best Jewelry for “Today I Am.” The theme for this film was Write Your Own Narrative for Life. Designer Kevin Hall announces the winner of Best Fashion Dance, which went to Iker Karrera and Weronika Kaminska for “Haunted By Love.” They also received Best Director.
Halfway through the event, it began raining and the audience made a mad dash to take cover in the restaurant. Lipkin kicked off her shoes, stood up on a table, and finished announcing the awards to the enthusiastic crowd. The 12th annual LJFFF will go down as a night to remember.
“Are You In Heaven” won Best Costume Design and Best Set Design. “Exuberance” awarded Antonio Contreras Aviance Best Documentary and Gehno Sanchez Aviance Best Sound Design. This film featured the untold story of Tanel Bedrossiantz. “Manhatta” won Best Cast Ensemble and Best Cinematography. The setting for “Black is Beautiful” looked like it was at Versailles during the 1700s. Lurissa Lawson won Best Hairstyling in this film. The Best Narration went to Didi Anderson for “Adel.”
The Best Music went to Christine Ko and Cameron Dunbar for “Delicate Noise.” The theme of this film was Be Kind to Yourself. The Best Art Direction was awarded to Esther-Louise Dorhout Mees for “Selenophilia.” The Best Message went to Rafaela Keunecke and Guto Gaelzer for “Dare to Dream.” Best Visual Effects was handed out to Joey Danger for “Black Metal Romance.” The Best Creative Concept was given to Cheryl Neeson, Jason Margaca, and Terri Stanley for “Voyeur De La Jeunesse.” Grant Maz took home Best Editing for “Emergence.”
The Best Fashion award went to Anthony Prince Leslie for “ASE.” This film embraces matriarchs in the black community with optimism and empowerment. Best Actor went to Marco De Ornelias for an amazing performance in the film “Scorpio.” The film “Hope” took home Best Actress for the magnificent performance by Elena Heuze and Best Picture to Mykhailo Dolgin.
