Sunset Scapes has created a more glamorous style picnicking experience for those seeking something extra in ideal coastal viewing spots like Sunset Cliffs.
The picnicking business blossomed for Sunset Scapes’ owners/designers Ewa and Matt Washburn during the planning of their 2019 wedding.
“We wanted the occasion to be just as much about our guests as it was about us,” said the couple at thesunsetscapes.com. “We focused on creating focal points and picturesque scenes throughout our whole event. We took all the lessons learned from our wedding and applied them to our business.”
Noting Sunset Scapes is a “luxury, pop-op picnic company,” Ewa pointed out their company does all the work for you “setting up and breaking down picnics around the City in public places like beaches and bays, in parks, and at places like Sunset Cliffs and La Jolla Cove. Through our packages, we offer add-ons like food and decorations for groups of two to 12 people for two hours or more. It’s a real opportunity to have a nice experience with your friends, family, or a date.”
Places like Sunset Cliffs where people go to walk, set down blankets, and catch stunning sunsets are perfect for customizing with a pop-up picnic. “The cliffs themselves, the views from them are the best backdrop with the waves and the ocean; it’s just a beautiful place to set up,” noted Matt Washburn.
He added it takes about 45 minutes to set up for two people, or about 90 minutes to set up for larger groups up to 12. “There are a lot of logistics you go through in planning,” he said.
With a professional background in marketing, Ewa already had done event planning for companies, so it wasn’t too difficult transitioning into planning for smaller groups. “With my love for event planning, we thought it would be a great opportunity to just jump on that wagon launching our own business in OB,” she said. “We just wanted to meet new people and see the City. We thought this was a really great idea and easier than setting up a storefront.”
Matt said they could appreciate, having moved from Chicago where you’re confined by the weather, starting an outdoor business in San Diego that can be operated virtually year-round. He said they’ve found their business is especially conducive for people looking for romantic or unorthodox venues.
“It’s great for date nights,” he said of their picnic service adding, “We just had a proposal.
“It’s also good for people who want something out of the box. But whether it’s out of the box, or in the box, it’s all done for you. We’ll give you what you want – flowers, dessert trays, photography, a nice setup in a perfect location. It’s really fun to be able to provide someone with a big day like that.”
Matt added Sunset Scapes has also proved popular with people wanting to do unique birthday, bachelorette, or anniversary parties. “Any outdoor activity that you just kind of show up and enjoy and relax at for two hours, then you go about the rest of your day,” he said.
Ewa said it’s been a real treat treating others to an extraordinary outdoor dining experience.
“One thing that was unexpected was the joy we get out of putting these picnics on for people,” she said. “We are truly in the business of making people happy. It’s the first time in my life where I had a job to make people happy, and it’s been really rewarding and it has kept us going.”
“People are just extremely happy with the show,” concluded Matt adding, “We wanted to offer the most detailed setup for the cheapest price.”
