A sailor pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of a woman in a Midway District motel and also admitted to inflicting corporal injury upon his wife in a separate incident.

Marquise Tyree Wisher, 28, admitted to causing the death of Rosa Jaco, 32, a mother of four children, on May 4, 2020, in a motel room on Greenwood Street near Hancock Street.

Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Matzger said Wisher would receive a maximum sentence of six years and two months in prison when he is sentenced on Oct. 14.

“He should get more time for this,” said Yolanda Jaco, the victim’s mother, on Thursday.

“I was very, very disappointed. We all were,” said the victim’s mother. “He did a plea bargain. I still have questions.”

She said most of their family will attend the sentencing and speak out about their loss. Yolanda Jaco said she is raising her daughter’s children and her oldest son, 13, may attend the sentencing.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Robert Trentacost took the guilty pleas Wednesday after Matzger said she filed a charge of involuntary manslaughter against Wisher. A murder charge had been filed earlier and was dismissed.

Wisher’s attorney, Randy Grossman, contended at the preliminary hearing that Wisher talked about “sensual choking” he did with the victim. He claimed that Wisher’s story never changed from the start and that Wisher even demonstrated his type of erotic choking with his right hand to police.

At the two-day preliminary hearing in July, a judge had ordered Wisher to stand trial for murder after someone from the crime lab testified his DNA was found under her fingernails.

Court records say the incident with Wisher’s wife occurred two months before the motel slaying. He also pleaded guilty to committing false imprisonment of his wife on March 10, 2020.

Wisher remains behind bars at the George Bailey Detention Facility on $1 million bail.
